HISTORY OF THE FOXTROT

The foxtrot was developed in the United States in the early 1900s and was first performed in the Jardin de
Danse on the roof of the New York Theatre.

It is believed to be named after one popularizer, vaudeville entertainer Harry Fox.

The foxtrot is often associated with the smooth dancing style of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers and has
become one of the most popular ballroom dances in history.

The first freestyle use of the (pre-Foxtrot) “slow step” was popularized in 1912, during ragtime music’s
heyday.

By 1915, new and melodic “pop” songs were the smash hits of the day. The dancing public quickly made
the change to a smoother, more rhythmic style of music, and their dancing began to absorb the better
attributes of the older dances.

Foxtrot quickly developed into the most popular social dance. It is the easiest to pick up and the hardest
to master.

From 1917 up to present day, the accent has been placed on smoother, more sophisticated dancing and
individualized expression, most figures are designed for the larger ballroom floor. However, these same
figures are also suited to the average dance floor when danced more compactly.

2ND SCENE

Waldo or Jevo: (Projector 1= P1 (Inside) , Projector 2= P2 (Outside))

Figures: Distinctive to the Foxtrot, dancers take long steps during the slower counts, and
short steps during the faster counts. In order to maintain the "trot" of this dance, dancers
should shorten their steps as the tempo of the music increases. Some of the steps create
attractive zig-zag patterns on the dance floor. A couple of steps distinctive to the Foxtrot
are the Weave and the Feather Step (Flash definition on P2)

Weave: Consists of 6 quick steps in a row, all on the toes. (Quick steps are usually
performed on the toes, with slow steps taken on the heels.) (Flash definition on P2, P1
white bg for shadow)

Feather Step: The man steps outside of the woman. This step earned its name because
of the action of the step: it resembles the "feathering the oar" action in rowing. (Flash
definition on P2, P1 white bg for shadow)

Basic Figures:
Three Step - is the Foxtrot version of a Left Foot Forward Change, consisting of three
progressive forward steps danced to the counts "Slow, quick quick". (Flash definition on
P2, P1 white bg for shadow)

Feather Step - is the Foxtrot version of a Right Foot Forward Change, consisting of three
progressive forward steps danced to the counts "Slow, quick quick". (Flash definition on P2,
P1 white bg for shadow)

Natural Turn - notable for its elongated, passing steps and its distinct two halves. The first
half contains a lady's heel turn, and is taken with the normal rise and fall and "Slow, quick
quick" timing. The second half contains a man's heel pull action, having no rise and fall, and
is counted "Slow, slow, slow". (Flash definition on P2, P1 white bg for shadow)

Reverse Turn - notable for its elongated, passing steps and its distinct two halves. The
first half contains a lady's heel turn, while the second half, known as a Feather Finish,
ends with man stepping outside partner. (Flash definition on P2, P1 white bg for
shadow)

Closed Impetus - the lady swings naturally around the man as he dances a heel turn.
(Flash definition on P2, P1 white bg for shadow)

Feather Finish - begins with man stepping back on his right foot, side and slightly forward
on his left, and finally forward with his right foot in CBMP, outside partner. (Flash
definition on P2, P1 white bg for shadow)

Standard Figures (all Flash definition on P2)

 Natural Weave - is the more progressive of the two, beginning like a Natural Turn
and moving in a sort of zig zag direction down the line of dance.
 Basic Weave - is a simple left-turning pattern of 6 steps, similar in foot placements
to the Open Reverse Turns of Tango or American style Waltz or Foxtrot, but taken
mostly on toes.
 Closed Telemark - is one of two ways to produce a Feather Step commenced
Outside Partner.
 Open Telemark - is a Silver Level figure.
 Hover Feather - can be used any time there is a Heel Pull for the man,
 including after 1-3 Natural Turn, 1-5 Natural Twist Turn, 1-8 Reverse Wave,
 1-2 Hover Telemark and 1-14 Extended Reverse Wave
 Hover Telemark -
 Hover Cross - is one of two figures that include a Feather Finish commenced
Outside Partner on the Left Side – the other is the Natural Zig Zag from PP.
 Open Impetus - can be used any time there is a Heel Pull for the man, including
after 1-3 Natural Turn, 1-5 Natural Twist Turn, 1-6 Reverse Wave, and 1-12
Extended Reverse Wave.
 Reverse Wave - In essence, it adds the Back Feather and another Back Three
Step to the existing Reverse Wave.

Rhythm and Music

 The Foxtrot is typically danced to big band Swing-style music, but may be danced
to most music types.
 In the Foxtrot, the first and third beats are accented more strongly than the second
and fourth beats. The foxtrot is typically danced to big band Swing-style music
written in 4/4 time, with tempo around 112 to 120 beats per minute (varies).

definition on P2, P1 white bg for shadow

Across - Movement across the direction of dance.

Action - A movement that does not involve a step or a change of weight, such as a
bow, kick, or hip twist.

Adjust - Modifying the size of the step, the amount of turn, or any other feature in
order to achieve grace and comfort.

Amalgamation - A sequence of two or more figures.

Arch - A hand movement in which the man's and woman's designated hands are joined

Gab: Mom, dad doon na lang muna kami sa side para makapag alone time

Zherg: sure, no problem

(pupunta si Bill at Neil sa dance floor)

Gab: sayaw tayo?

Bill: Hindi pa ako ganun sanay

Gab: don’t worry itututo ko sayo yung Proper Posture

1st check mo yung Body Posture mo – The body should be held up straight without either of the
partner leaning towards the other while maintaining a light contact in the diaphragm area. Either
should not be leaning over the imaginary fence at the upper part of both man and woman.

Then, Woman – The woman has two basic curves for lightness and balance namely: the lateral
and the backward curve. At all times, BOTH of the curves must be present.

The woman’s right arm should be the same with the man’s left arm for their hands to
meet. The four fingers of the woman must be placed between the man’s thumb and forefinger.

The woman’s left arm should be rested at the man’s right arm and must not bear
downwards. The thumb and wrist of the left hand must be placed parallel to the man’s arm,
should be placed on the man’s right arm depending on the partners’ height.
Bill: okay, pero dapat mag relax ka din kasi the man’s posture should not look tense. He must be
in a position of alertness, yet not too tense for easier movements.

The man’s left arm should be extended comfortably and should slope down slightly. The
man’s right arm should slope slightly downward and extend his right arm at the lower part of the
woman’s left shoulder blade. The wrist should be in contact with the woman’s underarm with
light pressure.

Gab: tama and keep in mind yung Weight – The head, shoulders, rib cage, and hips must be
aligned on a vertical center. The whole body must turn in its entirety with the partner.

Gab: O bumibitaw ka na dapat yung Arms mo – The arms should move with the body, like a
wooden attachment to the body. Do not drop the arms or move them independently when in
closed position.

Gab: (Natapakan ni Bill yung paa ni Gab) Ouch

Bill: sorry hindi ko nabantayan yung Foot Alignment ko – There are 4 tracks for the feet to travel
on when dancing in closed position. The man has two tracks, same with the woman. Wherever
either of the partner goes, they look opposite directions and follow each other’s direction. The
feet should not make noise when making steps, it should just skim the floor.

Bill: pati yung Legs ko dapat The standing leg moves the body while the moving leg is moved
by the body. The knees are always unlocked and ready to move.

Gab: yung Head – The head must always look left and never the center. The head should always
the aligned with the shoulders. The chin must also not be tilted upwards. Two good rules for the
head: Move the body and the head should react; and the head should follow the inclination of the
spine – looking into the sway line.

Bill: naalala ko na lahat ng lesson ko kahit mag Body Sway – When you sway, you must follow
the direction of the sway while you move to improve balance and harmony in the dance. Do not
force yourself to sway for that will be the cause of imbalance. You must go with the movement
to sway naturally.

(sway sway na si Bill-Neil pero pa side ng stage )

4th scene

Zherg: buti talaga magaling ako sumayaw

Maica: sus, nangangalawang ka na ata

Zherg: hindi ‘no, tanda ko pa lahat. Una, Keep the body in upright position to show self-
confidence. Sunod..

Maica: sunod naman ay Step slightly on your toes and do not drag the feet.

Z: Swing your legs from the hips.

M: Walk backward smoothly without looking at the floor. Girls usually backward first.

Z: Bend from the hip when executing a dip.

M: Keep a balanced position so that one can control his movement.

Z: and Lastly Relax as one moves with ease, listen and enjoy the music as well as the dance.

(tapos sumayaw sayaw kay konti)

M: Nakakamiss ang nakaraan hon

Z: Oo nga
