Introduction

 Purpose
 Share a solution developed through collaborative efforts between NALCO Champion and
G2 that was designed to identify internal corrosion risk threats, in order to align mitigation
strategies.
 Process
 Outline pending PHMSA regulations
 Review process for collecting data, analyzing and displaying results with Esri tools
 Explore future objectives
 Payoff
 Gain an understanding of how Esri applications and our industry expertise can be utilized
to identify internal corrosion risk threats and help our customers ensure regulatory
compliance by protecting the public, environment and assets.
Pipeline Regulations
 2017 Gas Pipeline mileage per PHMSA
 Reg. Transmission: 300,617
 Reg. Gathering: 18,155
 Non-reg Gathering: est. 400,000+
 Mega Rule implications
 50,000 – 100,000 miles of previously
unreported gathering lines will be subject to
CFR Part 192 regulations
 Internal corrosion existing regulations
 §192.475 Internal corrosion control: General.
§192.476 Internal corrosion control: Design and
construction of transmission line.
§192.477 Internal corrosion control: Monitoring. § 192.475 Internal corrosion control: General.
 49 CFR Part 192 Subpart O Gas Transmission Pipeline (a) Corrosive gas may not be transported by pipeline, unless the
corrosive effect of the gas on the pipeline has been investigated and
Integrity Management steps have been taken to minimize internal corrosion.
Internal Corrosion

 Solution developed to effectively assess IC

threats to establish preventative and
mitigative measures for risk reduction
 Field personnel collect IC data along the
pipeline system
 Perform industry-based algorithms to
determine level of risk
 Provide customized reporting for strategic
decision-making
 Provide IC risk analysis on historical,
current or future pipeline operating
conditions
 Assist with risk reduction and economic

Field Data Collection
 Meet with Operations, Measurement, Regulatory and other
relevant departments at client office to review existing
data, identify any data gaps and understand the
expectations
 Modify and prioritize risk algorithm variables if required
based on pipeline operators priorities, risk methodologies
and history
 Clearly define internal corrosion field testing and sampling
requirements and procedures
 Nalco Champion internal corrosion specialist and company
representative perform field tests and acquire test samples
at each inlet/outlet site, where feasible
 Collect and log field test data using ArcGIS Collector and
upload on location, if possible
Process Data

 Run the risk model using data collected

from the field and the Enterprise GIS
 Esri Desktop tools
 Model Builder
 Python Scripts
 The process performs the following:
 Snaps field collected data to centerline
 Dynamically segment centerline with
Enterprise GIS
 Runs Risk Algorithm to assign risk threat
levels
Data Analytics

 Pipeline is dynamically segmented between the

inlets and outlets along the system, where the
flow conditions and product composition can
affect the internal corrosion risk threat
 Output contains:
 All input attributes collected from the field
and from the GIS
 Calculated risk threat levels for each internal
corrosion risk factor
 Calculated
 Consequence of Failure (COF)
 Likelihood of Failure (LOF)
 Risk of Failure (ROF) = LOF x COF
Display Results

 Results can be published to ArcGIS

Online or Portal
 Leverage Insights for ArcGIS for data
analysis and trending
 Create Web Map Application for viewing
and querying results
 Based on the results, preventative and
mitigative measures (P&MMs) can be
implemented and the effectiveness of
the IC risk reductions can be monitored
and tracked over time
Mitigating the Risk

 More frequent internal corrosion control mitigation and maintenance activities;

 Enhanced monitoring of internal corrosion systems
 Sampling
 Additional monitoring points

 Enhanced pigging program

 Improve internal corrosion control systems

 Corrosion inhibitors and/or biocides, dehydration, gas sweetening

 Eliminate or reduce the source of internal corrosion risk threat

 Monitor, replace or repair the pipeline
Future Objectives

 Hazardous Liquids IC Risk Modeling

 An analytical process that integrates relevant internal corrosion (IC) information about
pipeline integrity and the consequences of a failure
 Advanced Pipeline Risk IQ
 Include “What if” scenario capabilities
 Incorporation of Nalco Champion Laboratory Analytical database to validate chemical
treatment effectiveness
 P&M Measures Validation Analysis to In Line Inspection Data
 An analytical evaluation by aligning identified high IC risk line segments with ILI data to
validate the effectiveness of IC treatment programs
 Internal Corrosion Direct Assessment (ICDA) – NACE SP0110-2018 SG & NACE SP0206-2016 SG
 An integrity assessment process conducted for the purpose of locating and remediating
anomalies arising from internal corrosion of a dry gas or wet gas pipeline
