1. An angle modulated signal with carrier frequency ωc = 2π × 106 is
described by the equation
ϕEM (t) = 10 cos(ωc t + 0.1 sin 2000πt)
(a) Find the power of the modulated signal.
(b) Find the frequency deviation ∆f . (c) Find the phase deviation ∆φ. (d) Estimate the bandwidth of ϕEM (t). 2 2. Given m(t) = e−t , fc = 104 Hz, kf = 3000, and kp = 8000π.
(a) Find ∆f , the frequency deviation for FM and PM.
(b) Estimate the bandwidths of FM and PM waves. Hint: Find M (ω) and observe the rapid decay of this spectrum. Its 3-dB bandwidth is even smaller than 1 Hz (B ≪ ∆f ).
3. Single-sideband modulation can viewed as a hybrid form of amplitude
modulation and frequency modulation. Evaluate the envelope and instantaneous frequency of an SSB wave for the following two cases:
(a) When only the upper sideband is transmitted.
(b) When only the lower sideband is transmitted.
4. In a frequency-modulated radar, the instantaneous frequency of the
transmitted carrier is varied as in Figure 1, which is obtained by us- ing a triangular modulating signal. The instantaneous frequency of the received echo signal is shown dashed in Figure 1, where τ is the round-trip delay time. The transmitted and received signals are ap- plied to a mixer, and the difference frequency component is retained.

Assuming that f0 τ ≪ 1, determine the number of beat cycles at the
mixer output, averaged over one second, in terms of peak deviation ∆f of the carrier frequency, the delay τ , and the repetition frequency f0 of the transmitted signal.
5. Design(only the block diagram) an Armstrong indirect FM modula-
tor to generate an FM carrier with carrier frequency of 96 Mhz and ∆f = 20 KHz. A narrow-band FM generator with fc = 200 KHz and adjustable ∆f in the range of 9 to 10 Hz is available. The stock room also has an oscillator with adjustable frequency range of 9 to 10 MHz. There is a bandpass filter with any center frequency, and only frequency doublers are available.
