Master and PhD studentships on Electron Microscopy and

Advanced Materials

The Electron Microscopy and Quantum Materials Lab. at the Chungnam National University
(Republic of Korea, https://baramcal.wixsite.com/mysite) has open Master and PhD student positions
on Electron Microscopy study and Advanced Materials.

Position description: Electron Microscopy and Advanced Materials

(1) Operando Electron Microscopy for Detection of Catalysis: In-situ/Operando electron

microscope methods are rapidly advancing based on the development of device fabrication
processes and ultrafine machining techniques. The selected candidate will conceive, realize
and characterize Operando electron microscope techniques where a novel design of the
technique allows gathering information for dynamic behaviors of catalysts. And he/she will
perform fundamental research in catalytic reactions.

(2) In-situ Electron Microscopy for the Phase Transition and Phase Transformation of
Nano/Quantum Materials: By using state-of-the-art electron microscope techniques, we can
study the atomic and electronic structure of materials. The candidate will study the phase
transition and phase transformation of nano/quantum materials depending on the size.
He/she will have a chance to work together with researchers on the theory.

(3) Synthesis and Microstructural characterization of Quantum Materials: The candidate will
synthesize perovskite quantum dots and characterize the atomic and electron structures of
the quantum dots, based on transmission electron microscopy study. He/She will learn
various high-resolution electron microscopy techniques and spectroscopy methods to
explore the origin of the physical and chemical properties of quantum materials..

(4) Advanced Sensors and Detection Materials based on 3D Printing: The candidate will have
a chance to develop new 3D printing materials and to fabricate advanced sensors. The
selected candidate will fabricate bio and gas sensors using nano/quantum materials and
3D printing methods and evaluate the performance. He/she will study the sensing
mechanism based on the atomic and electronic structure.
Requirements

We welcome applications from candidates with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in materials science,
physics, chemistry, and/or related majors with top marks and with a background and interest in
materials synthesis, characterization/application, and device fabrication. Candidates must prove a
strong attitude towards experimental physics and chemistry and the drive and capacity to tackle
different aspects of a complex problem with large independence.

Application
