Closing the Divide

Two emerging technologies that could help close the divide

1. Laptops have been around for a while now. However in an effort to close the digital
divide schools throughout the country are giving laptops to each student for the entire
school day and some even allow them to take them home. By schools giving this
opportunity to students is potentially allowing them to expand their knowledge
technological wise and closing the gap.

2. We use cellphones to make calls, texts, and socialize. Cellphones are playing a great
role in closing the divide in the United States. In some cases students that do not have
laptops, or internet available to them at home typically use their cellphones to do
homework with. It is more likely for a household to have a cell phone then a laptop, “ten
percent of African Americans and 16 percent of Hispanics depended on a smartphone
for home internet connectivity.” (Loyola University)
