10 minutes As a class we will complete a KWL chart to activate prior
knowledge and build upon that knowledge. They will
demonstrate their knowledge by recreating various cycles.
Students will reflect by doing a gallery walk.
Modeling: I will read the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar,

stages of the butterfly's life. I will also display various
artworks showing the different stages.
Guided Practice: The students will complete a butterfly life

Independent Practice: The students will be assigned a

8 minutes stage of life by drawing a Popsicle stick out of a hat. Using
the materials provided, they will recreate the stage of life in
an artistic way.
Lesson Closure: The students will clean up their areas. The
class will do a gallery walk to see all of their classmates
5 minutes butterfly stages displayed.
Assessment Methods/Strategies: I will be able to
determine the student's understanding by moving around the
5 minutes room and monitor the student's ability to create the correct
stage of life.
Resources: The Very Hungry Caterpillar book, Youtube video of butterfly life-cycle, art
materials (construction paper, markers, crayons, glue, scissors, googly eyes).

Reflection: This activity will help students make connections to real life. The students will
have various examples of the life-cycle of a butterfly and will be actively engaged by different
types of media. The students will demonstrate their knowledge and be able to recreate the
cycle.
