COOPERATIVE HISTORY

The Checkered Farm Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Multipurpose Cooperative was

conceptualised by a group of farmers with a 220 hectare Banana Plantation once owned
by Checkered Farm Inc. (CFI). The CFI was able to own the land they were tilling and
became an Agrarian Reform Beneficiary in 1995.

The 170 Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries formed a cooperative and registered with the
Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) in February 22, 1996, with the name
CHECKERED FARMS AGRARIAN REFORM BENEFICIARIES MULTIPURPOSE
COOPERATIVE (CFARBEMPCO). After registration, the Cooperative entered into a
Marketing Agreement-Growership contract with the former land owner which started out
rough for both the cooperative and the farmers.

However, their difficult situation did not stop them from pursuing the ultimate goal of
stability and success. The Cooperative collaborated with other neighbouring ARB Coops
with the same situation and received assistance from the FARM COOP under the
leadership of Atty. Koronado Apuzen in the running the plantation until the Cooperative
was able to abrogate the contract and sign a new Freight on board (FOB) agreement
favourable to both parties.

Today, the CFARBEMPCO leads the ARBO’s Coop in exporting volumes of quality
Bananas which are comparable with the Multinational Companies in the Philippines.
