MuC 100 - FUNDAMENTALS OF CONDUCTING

PURPOSE:
This course is designed to introduce the student to the fundamental techniques and concepts of conducting,
emphasizing the development of physical conducting technique and the rudiments of score study.

REQUIRED TEXT:
Green, Elizabeth A.H. The Modern Conductor. Englewood Cliffs, N.J.: Prentice-Hall.

EXAMINATIONS:
Attendance - 25%
In-class conducting assignments, written report, written exams - 25%
“Midterm” Exam - 25%
Finals - 25%

ATTENDANCE
Attendance at all classes is required.
Absences may be excused with prior approval of the instructor.
Please bring your text, baton and all assigned conducting material to each class.

REQUIRED CONCERT ATTENDANCE


Concerts - performed by chorus, orchestra or concert band/wind ensemble, led by a conductor – with one to
two-page “concert review” submitted for one concert.
Concert review is due December .
'Please note: Failure to turn in these assignments will result in a reduction of your final course grade.

A written evaluative summary (typed) must be completed for a minimum of one concert and needs to include
the following:
In list form:
• Name of ensemble; date/time of concert; director(s)' name
• Description of ensemble(s) - include grade level(s) of performers
• Context for performance (e.g. conference, community concert, etc.)

In paragraph form:
• Comment on concert procedures and dress
• Evaluate the quality of the concert (were the performers prepared?)
• In addition to the actual performance, what else did you observe that helped the success of the program?
• What one aspect of the program particularly impressed you? Why?
• What one aspect of the program would you improve upon if you were the instructor? Why?
• What did you learn from this concert and what concepts can you apply toward teaching
• Grammar and punctuation will be evaluated. Please have someone proof your work.
