Design Steps of Ogee Spillway

Step –I- Calculate Approximate Value of He (hd)

Q = C.Le. He3/2

Take Le =L = Span x clear width

C =2.2

Step –II-Check the Spillway Either Low or High

h
If
hd
> 1.33- high Spillway ----where effect of velocity approach is neglected
h
If
hd
< 1.33- high Spillway ----where effect of velocity approach is considered
Where- hd = He and h= height of spillway crest- average bed level

Step –III-Check for Discharge Coefficient for high or low spillway

hd+ d he+h
he
= h
> 1.7 – high spillway -downstream effect negligible
Step –IV-Effective length of Spillway

Le= L -2 (N.Kp +Ka) .He

Assume Kp= 0.01

Ka =0.1

N= Number of Peirs

Note- Assume He – slightly more than approximate He (Step –I)

And Q = C.Le. He3/2

Calculate He -----Its Value is nearer to assumed He

Step –V-Determination of Downstream Profile By

xn = K Hn-1 y

Assume K=2.0 and n= 1.85

Calculate y in terms of x
Ex. - y =0.05 x1..85

Differentiate w.r.to x

dy V
= = 0.05 x1.85
dx H

Calculate value of x and y

Step –VI-Calculate Co-ordinate of Curve –

By taking x =1 to x = value of obtained step V

Similarly calculate value of y also

x 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
y ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

Step –VII-Draw Downstream Profile of Spillway

Design Example -1. Design Suitable section of overflow section (Spillway) concrete dam
having downstream sloping face sloping at 0.7 H: 1V. The design discharge is 8000 m3/sec.
The height of spillway crest is kept at RL 204.00 m .the average bed level is 100.0m the
spillway length consist of 6m span having clear width of 10m each .thickness of each pier
may be taken to 2.5m

Given Data-

Thickness of Pier =2.5m

Average bed level =100.00m

The length of spillway =6m

Downstream slope = 0.7 H: 1V

Q= 8000 m3/sec

Solution –
Step –I- Calculate Approximate Value of He ( hd)

Q = C.Le. He3/2

Take Le =L = Span x clear width

C =2.2

Le =L = 6 x 10 = 60m

So

8000 = 2.2 x 60 x He3/2

He = 15.5m

Step –II-Check the Spillway Either Low or High

hd = He and h= height of spillway crest- average bed level

h = 204-100 =104.00m

h 104
hd
= 15.5
= 6.70 m 1.33- high Spillway ----where effect of velocity approach is
neglected

Step –III-Check for Discharge Coefficient for high or low spillway

hd+ d he+h 104 +15.5

he
= h
=
15.5
=7.70 m> 1.7 – high spillway -downstream effect

negligible

Upstream slope –the upstream slope is kept vertical

Step –IV-Effective length of Spillway

Le= L -2 (N.Kp +Ka) .He

Assume Kp= 0.01

Ka =0.1

Assume He – slightly more than approximate He (Step –I) say 16.3m

Le = 60 – 2 ( 5 x0.01 + 0.1 ) x 16.3

Le = 55.1m

Q = C.Le. He3/2
8000 = 2.2 x 55.1 x He3/2

He = 16.4m ~ 16.3 m ---ok

Step –V-Determination of Downstream Profile By

xn = K Hn-1 y

assume K=2.0 And n= 1.85

x1.85 = 2 x He0.85 . y

x1.85 = 2 x 16.40.85 . y

y = 0.0463 x1.85

Differentiate w.r.to x

dy
= 1.85 x 0.0463 x1.85
dx

dy
= 0.085 x0.85
dx

dy V 1
= = 0.085 x0.85 =
dx H 7

x = 27.4m

and y = 21.5m

the co-ordinate from x=0 to x= 27.4m are worked out

x y
1 0.05
2 0.17
3 0.35

27.4 21.15m
Design Example 2- A spillway is to discharge 20 m3/sec/m length . if maximum water level is
to be 50m above river bed level; obtain profile of spillway crest using USWES method .take
Upstream face as vertical and downstream face has slope of 0.8 H to 1V

Given Data-

Q= 20 m3/sec

Solution –

Step –I- Calculate Approximate Value of He ( hd)

Q = C.Le. He3/2

Take Le =L = 1m (discharge per m length )

C =2.2

20 = 2.2 x 1 x He3/2

He = 4.36 m

Step –II-Determination of Downstream Profile By

xn = K Hn-1 y

assume K=2.0 And n= 1.85

x1.85 = 2 x He0.85 . y

x1.85 = 2 x 4.360.85 . y

y = 0.142 x1.85

Differentiate w.r.to x

dy
= 1.85 x 0.142 x1.85
dx

dy
= 0.263 x0.85
dx
dy V 1
= = 0.263 x0.85 =
dx H 0.8

x = 6.21m

and y = 4.19

the co-ordinate from x=0 to x= 6.21m are worked out

x y =0.142 x1.85

1 0.142
2 0.515
3 1.090
4 1.858
5 2.808
6 3.930
6.21 4.190
