1NUR-8 | MIRABUENO | MONTECILLO | ONG | PADILLA

WHAT IS LEUKEMIA?
A cancer wherein white blood cells are rapidly

produced.

Immature leukocytes are unable to fight various

infections.

Impairs the production of other necessary blood

cells.

Does not produce tumors.

CLASSIFICATIONS
SPEED

ACUTE CHRONIC

immediate and rapid growth slow progression

CELLS AFFECTED

LYMPHATIC MYELOGENOUS

lymphocytes marrow cells

involved with the immune system produce RBC, WBC, and platelets
TYPE CAUSE POPULATION

ACUTE LYMPHOCYTIC rapid growth of immature most common for children

LEUKEMIA (ALL) lymphoid cells adults are also affected.

ACUTE MYELOGENOUS
rapid growth of myeloid cells adults and children are both affected
LEUKEMIA (AML)

CHRONIC LYMPHOCYTIC slow growth of cancerous adults over 55 years old

LEUKEMIA (CLL) lymphoid cells rare for children

CHRONIC MYELOGENOUS slow growth of cancerous

mainly affects adults

LEUKEMIA (CML) myeloid cells

Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia Acute Myelogenous Leukemia
Chronic Lymphocytic Anemia Chronic Myelogenous Anemia
RARE LEUKEMIAS
Hairy Cell Leukemia - r a r e c h r o n i c l e u k e m i a
Chronic myelomonocytic leukemia - t y p e o f C M L
Juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia - p r e v a l e n t i n c h i l d r e n u n d e r 6 y/o

Large granular lymphocytic leukemia - s l o w o r f a s t t y p e o f C L L

Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) - s u b t y p e o f A M L
High-level radiation Chemotherapy
Down Syndrome
exposure

FACTORS THAT COULD CAUSE LEUKEMIA

Excessive exposure Family History

to certain chemicals
1.CHROMOSOME
TRANSLOCATION
results to oncogene, cancer-promoting

THE CAUSE OF LEUKEMIA gene

is still unknown, however there are common

features seen in different types of leukemia

2. LI-FRAUMENI
SYNDROME
inherited mutation in a tumor suppressor

gene called TP53

CHROMOSOME TRANSLOCATION
LI-FRAUMENI SYNDROME
SIGNS &SYMPTOMS
Immune system is compromised

Bruising without trauma

Anemia

Other flu-like symptoms

Headache
TREATMENT
Chemotherapy- most common treatment

Biological therapy- enhances immune system

Targeted therapy- targets specific factors

Radiation therapy- radioactive waves

Stem cell transplant- done after chemotherapy or radiation

therapy also called “bone marrow transplant”
