Motive Question: Do the verbs used in the lines of the song

function as verbs? We will discover the answer as we go
through the lesson.
"Fly"
I came to win, to fight, to conquer, to thrive
I came to win, to survive, to prosper, to rise
To fly
To fly
[Nicki Minaj:]
I wish today it will rain all day
Maybe that will kinda make the pain go away
Trying to forgive you for abandoning me
Praying but I think I'm still an angel away
Angel away, yeah strange in a way
Maybe that is why I chase strangers away
They got their guns out aiming at me
But I become Neo when they're aiming at me
Me, me, me against them
Me against enemies, me against friends
Somehow they both seem to become one
A sea full of sharks and they all smell blood
They start coming and I start rising
Must be surprising, I'm just surmising
I win, thrive, soar, higher, higher, higher
More fire

[Chorus - Rihanna:]
I came to win, to fight, to conquer, to thrive
I came to win, to survive, to prosper, to rise
To fly
To fly
Everybody wanna try to box me in
Suffocating every time it locks me in

3. POP THE INFINITIVES

Pop the balloons which contains verbs written in strips of paper. Use the verbs in a
sentence using the pattern TO + VERB. Write your sentences on the board.

Create Believe Say Enjoy

Perform Draw Submit Think

B. ABSTRACTION

Discussion questions:

1. Take note of the verbs used in the sentences ( to create, to believe, to say, to enjoy, to
perform, to draw, How do these verb forms function?

2. Do these verb forms function as verb?

These verb forms are called Verbals. Verbals are verb forms which function as another part
of speech. There are three types of verbals. Gerund, Participle and Infinitive.

The verb forms we used in the sentences are Infinitives.

An infinitive is formed from a verb but doesn't act as a verb. It acts as a noun, adjective, or adverb. It is
actually made up of two words: to + verb.

to create, to believe, to say, to enjoy, to perform, to draw- all of these are Infinitives. An infinitive will
almost always begin with to followed by the simple form of the verb. Important Note: Because an infinitive
is not a verb, you cannot add s, es, ed, or ing to the end. Ever!
