MULTICULTURAL LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Student____ Jade DeLile_____________

Subject/Concepts Science___________ Grade Level__4th__

1. Standards:

 CCSD: Students understand that many people contribute to the field of science.

o Observable objective: The student will analyze the recap worksheet and choose

which answers fits best on each question. Also, the student will create a

biography from the list of female scientists that were discussed in the power point.

 Multicultural goal: Teach from multicultural perspectives to promote positive gender,

racial, cultural, class, and individual identities.

o Observable objective: The student will memorize and recognize famous female

scientists who have contributed to the science community.

 Auditory-Visual-Kinesthetic learning styles:

o This lesson plan will cover all types of learning styles. It will help visual learners

from the power point presentation that I’ve created. The pictures of the female

scientists will help them memorize and identify them, along with the mini

biographies of each scientists’ accomplishments, so they can write it down and

absorb the information. My lesson plan will also help auditory learners

understand the information by giving an oral presentation along with the power

point, so they can absorb the information by being read to. Also, during the exit

slip activity, they will be able to listen to what others have learned as well.

Lastly, kinesthetic learners will also benefit from this lesson plan by completing

my mini biography activity, that includes a drawing activity, which is very hands
on and is their strong suit. The exit slip activity (the “snowstorm”) will get them

to move their bodies around by throwing the piece of paper that they wrote on

regarding on what they have learned during the lesson.

 Gardner's Intelligence: Gardner’s spatial intelligence is implemented in the mini

biography activity where they have to draw a picture of the female scientist that they

choose, which will cover spatial intelligence by the student recreating visual images by

memory.

2. Materials: Power Point presentation, three handouts (word search, recap questionnaire, and

mini biography), colored pencils, and a piece of scratch paper.

3. Instruction- learning Process:

 Do First: I will use the word search activity as an introduction and warm-up to the

lesson plan, which contain words that pertain to the female scientists that they will be

learning about.

 Mini-lesson: For the mini-lesson, I will have an oral presentation, along with a power

point, so the students have something visually they can follow.

 Guided Practice: For the guided practice, I will use the recap questionnaire handout, so

the students can apply what they have learned from the mini-lesson.

 Independent Practice: The independent practice is the mini biography activity. It’s

where the student picks one of the female scientist that was discussed in the mini-lesson,

then they have to answer the questions and draw a picture of the female scientist.

 Exit Slip: Lastly, I will use the “snowstorm” closure activity. Students will write down

one thing they have learned during the lesson on a piece of paper, then they will wad it up

and throw the paper “snowball” in the air. After, the student will pick up whatever
snowball is near them and read it aloud.

5. Reflection: During the lesson plan, students will learn about different scientists who

contribute to the science world, and who have also made history. Not only will that cover a

CCSD objective, but also the multicultural objective as well. Students will understand that

women have also contributed to science, and not just men. It gives female students the power to

push themselves more, and to give them the confidence that they can accomplish whatever they

put their mind to, even if it’s something that males generally dominate in.

During the “instructions-learning process” students will interact with not only their

teacher, but with their peers as well. They will interact with their teacher during the mini-lesson,

when they ask questions, and they will interact with their peers when it comes to the exit slip

activity.

The strengths of my lesson plan cover all three learning styles, and at least two of the
Gardener’s intelligences, while still having fun doing the activities. Even though my lesson plan

covers a lot of objectives and standards, I still think there are some changes that I could have

made. Although the learning activities that I would have implemented cover all learning styles, I

think that it might be too much for the students. Also, I think that it might not fit the time

constraints that were given for each learning process. The change that I could make in-order to

fit the time constraints and not be overwhelming for students is by making the biography activity

into a group activity. I would blow up the biography activity worksheet into a poster board, and

have them do the posters in groups, which will also benefit kinesthetic learners as well. Lastly,

by making the biography activity into a group project it will also raise the level of engagement

with their peers.
