STANDARD LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Describe the Class
Second to Third grade. 25-30 students (none with special needs)

Subject/Skill:
Science/life cycles

III.
Objective(s)
Students will be able to recall the stages of the life cycle. Students will be able
to work in a group setting to test knowledge. Students will be able to define
metamorphosis.

IV.
Procedures
(optional: Read the “Very Hungry Caterpillar” before discussion)
Begin group discussion on the life cycle. Direct students to think of the first
stage of life for most animals (egg) and write it on the board. By guiding the
discussion, or telling the students if needed, come to the next stage (larva, or
caterpillar) discuss the purpose of a caterpillar, its main job is to eat before
moving onto the next stage (Pupa/Chrysalis/cocoon). Continue writing each
step on the board and include a little drawing of each to help remind the
students as you go. Discuss the purpose of the chrysalis. Introduce the term
Metamorphosis, write it on the board and explain what it means. After
discussing metamorphosis, write the final step (adult) on the board and
include a drawing. Recap all the steps before moving onto activity.

Grouping Structures
Groups will be decided at random to ensure no one group is at advantage or
disadvantage. If teacher sees it fit students may be moved or separated.

Assessment
Matching game: the game would include photos of the life cycle for different
bugs. Each bug would have 4 pictures, one of each stage. As a group the
students must use what they learned about the life cycle to organize the
pictures in the order they occur in the cycle.
