Assignment No. 3 –RELATED RATES/TIME RATES

NAME: ___________________________________________ SCORE

COURSE & YEAR: _____________________
DATE: ________________________________

Solve the following problems and draw the reference diagrams completely.

1. A balloon is rising at a constant speed of 4 m/sec. A boy is cycling along a straight road at a speed of 8 m/sec. When he
passes under the balloon, it is 36 meters above him. How fast is the distance between the boy and balloon increasing
3 seconds later?

2. A water tank is in the shape of a cone with vertical axis and vertex downward. The tank has radius 3 m and is 5 m high.
At first the tank is full of water, but at time t = 0 (in seconds), a small hole at the vertex is opened and the water begins
to drain. When the height of water in the tank has dropped to 3 m, the water is flowing out at 2 m 3/s. At what rate, in
meters per second, is the water level dropping then?
3. A baseball diamond is a square 90 ft on a side. A player runs from first base to second at a rate of 16 ft/sec. At what rate
is the player’s distance from third base changing when the player is 30 ft from first base?

4. Two ships are steaming straight away from a point O along routes that make a 120° angle. Ship A moves at 14 knots
(nautical miles per hour; a nautical mile is 2000 yd). Ship B moves at 21 knots. How fast are the ships moving apart
when and OB = 3 nautical miles?
