CHAPTER 3

Methodology

This chapter discusses the (1) Research Design, (2) Respondents of

the Study, (3) Research Instrument, (4) Data Gathering Procedure, and (5)

Data Analysis Procedure.

Research Design

The descriptive-correlational design will be used in conducting

this study. The descriptive design answers the questions on what,

where, and who particularly on the level of knowledge, attitude, and

practices regarding road safety among motorcycle-riding students of

St. Anthony’s College for School Year 2019 – 2020. The correlational

design answers the relationship of the level of knowledge, attitude, and

practices regarding road safety among these students.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents for this study will be the ___ motorcycle-riding

students from the all the department including Senior High School of

Saint Anthony’s College.

Sample size and sampling technique. To determine the number

of respondents per department, they were selected through a purposive

sampling technique. The researcher will get representatives from all

the departments to suit ______ students needed for the study.

To determine the sample size by department for a population of

______, Slovin’s formula as indicated below was used.

n¡ = xn
N

where: n¡ = sample size

N¡ = total population of

N = total population of Grade VI pupils

N = sample size

The number of respondents per department is shown in Table A.

Research Instrument

This study will utilize an adopted road safety questionnaire of

Ishrat Riaz and Samia Shahid. This research required primary data as

the study objectives can only be achieved in this way. This questionnaire

will be used for primary data collection. The questionnaire is divided into

main four parts in order to assess the awareness, attitudes and practices

of professional drivers. The first part covered demographic characteristics

of the students. The second part covers checklist of road signs (to assess

the knowledge of students about traffic rules). This part will be improved

to determine the real knowledge of the students. The third part uses

questions that show students’ attitude towards traffic rules and forth

part contains the practices of students involving road safety.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researcher will obtain a written permission from the College

President thru the respective department heads to conduct the study and

gather data regarding the level of knowledge, attitude, and practices

regarding road safety among motorcycle-riding students of Saint

Anthony’s College. After permission will be granted, the researchers will

distribute the questionnaires to the respondents to be answered. All data

will be collected, tabulated, analyzed and interpreted. The results of the

study will be documented.

Data Analysis Procedure

The researcher will employ the following tools to descriptively and

inferentially answer the questions in the study:

Frequency and Percentage. The frequency and percentage will be

used to measure the occurrences of sex and year level of respondents.

Mean. The mean will be used to measure the level of knowledge,

attitude, and practices regarding road safety among motorcycle-riding

students of Saint Anthony’s College.

To determine respondents’ level of knowledge, attitude, and practices, the

parameter limits are as follows:

Mean Verbal Interpretation

2.51 – 3.00 Very high

2.01 – 2.50 High

1.51 – 2.00 Low

1.00 – 1.50 Very low

t-test. This will be used to ascertain the significant difference in the level

of knowledge, attitude, and practices regarding road safety among motorcycle-

riding students when they are grouped according to sex.

One-Way ANOVA. This will be used to ascertain the significant difference

in the level of knowledge, attitude, and practices regarding road safety among

motorcycle-riding students when they are grouped according to year level.

Eta coefficient. It will be used to determine the significant relationship in

level of knowledge, attitude, and practices regarding road safety among

motorcycle-riding students. Alpha level will be set at 0.05.

Statistical computations were availed of via the Statistical Package for

Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 21.
