Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity

A. Preparation

Good morning class, how’s your morning? Good morning ma’am

We’re fine ma’am
Well that’s good!
Who’s absent for today? Nobody is absent Ma’am
a. Review
b. Drill

B. Motivation

Today we will have a short activity. This time I

am going to divide you into two groups.

I have here some statements, now try to identify

if this statements are true or false. For the twist
of the game, write my name if the statement is
true and if it is false, write my surname.

Understand? Ye ma’am!

Now let’s start!

Statements:
1. A basketball will bounce back higher
than its height of release. (COTEJO)
2. A bowling ball will bounce on the beach
sand. ( COTEJO)
3. When you push a wall, the wall pushes
you back (CHARITY)
4. In theory, a planet collided with Earth
which brought the extinction of
dinosaurs (COTEJO)
5. When you dribble a basketball at an
angle , the ball will bounce in the same
angle (CHARITY)

(This activity ends when all the questions are

answered)
C. Presentation

Now, base on our activity, what do you think is About objects that are colliding ma’am.
our topic for today?
Yes Frecil?

Very good idea Frecil! Surely our topic for

today is about COLLISION. Everybody read! COLLISION

Now can anybody tell me something about Ma’am I think, collision happen when objects clash
collision? Yes, Jaymer? into each other.

That’s correct! Collision happen when objects

bump or clashes on surfaces or on other objects.
It is an encounter between two objects resulting
in exchange of impulse and momentum, but
more practically, can anybody give me an
example of a collision?
Car crash ma’am!
Yes, Julius? A bouncing ball
Very good Julius, car accidents brought about
by a collisions are very dangerous, so when in a
moving vehicle so be mindful of a safety
precautions like wearing seatbelts or protective
wear. Understood? Yes maam!

Later on, we will be discussing different

categories of collisions, which I will explain it
to you the different collision between objects.
Are you ready? Yes ma’am!
D. Activity
Very well, now, I will group you into 5 groups.
Since we’ve checked about your familiarity with
collisions, per group I will give you sets of
marbles that you will manipulate depending on
the instructions that I will be giving. Are you
grouped and ready class? We are ready ma’am

Be ready, because after this activity will let you

explain what we have done with the marbles.

Okay class, here is the first instruction, I need (Doing the activity)
you to make two marbles collide with each
other. Done? Yes Ma’am

Next, put one marble at rest and have one

marble collide with it. Are my instructions clear (Doing the activity)
so far class? Yes Ma’am

Now have you done it? Yes Ma’am

Lastly, have one of your members hold one Yes Ma’am

marble in place using a finger, done?

Now make the other marble collide with the one

that is being held in place. (The students do so and have a marble observations)

E. Analysis

Now that we’re done, sit tight and lets start

explaining what had happened with your
activity. Ready class? Yes Ma’am!
On the first task, you made the two marbles
move towards each other so that they will Possible answer:
collide. After colliding, what happened to the Ma’am the two marble instantly move apart from each
marble. other, in opposite directions

Right! In the first instruction, the two marbles

move apart after colliding.

How about the second task?

Who can give us observations about what had
happen when a marble in motion collided one
marble that was at rest? Yes Jaime? Ma’am when the moving marble collided with the one
at rest, the non moving marble moved along the
direction of the moving marble.
Correct! In the case of the second task, when the
moving marble collided with the one at rest, the
two marbles move in the same direction.

Now, how about the third task?

The marble in motion collided with the one that
was being held down, what observations have
you taken about this event? Yes Mary Rose? Ma’am the moving marble bounces back.

You’re right! In the third instruction, the moving

marble, obviously bounced back as it collided
with the held marble.

F. Abstraction
Class there are two types of collision, the elastic
and inelastic collision.

Elastic collision class is the one in which the

total kinetic energy of the system does not
change and the colliding objects bounce off after
collision.
While the Inelastic collision is the one in which
the total kinetic energy of the system changes
and when the objects will stick together after
collision is called Perfectly Inelastic Collision.

As an example I have here a basketball. Observe

what happens when I drop the ball on the floor.
(Drops ball)

Class what objects collided when I dropped the

ball? The ball and the floor collided.

Correct! The ball and the floor collided. Now It is an Elastic collision ma’am.
what type of collision happened?

Very good! Now when the ball bounces, elastic

collision happened. In the activity earlier, which The elastic collision was the first instruction, ma’am.
one was elastic collision. Yes Barbe? The two marbles bounced and move separately.

Good! Now eyes here in front. I will drop a

plastic container on the floor. I want you to
observe and identify what type of collision will
happen.
(Drops a plastic container)

Can you identify what type of collision Inelastic collision happened ma’am!
happened?
Okay! Inelastic collision happened when I
dropped the plastic bottle on the floor. Now
what do you think that it is an inelastic
collision? Yes Christine! After colliding ma’am, the plastic bottle did not reach
its original position when it bounced.
Very good Christine! The plastic bottle did not
reach its original position after bouncing. In
scientific terms, some of the bottles kinetic
energy was lost.

Now, I will drop a book on the floor. What do

you think will happen, class? Will the book The book will not bounce ma’am.
bounce?

Thank you! Now we’ll see what happen when I

dropped this book.
(Drops book.)
Okay so you are right! The book will not
bounce. Now what type of collision is this? A perfectly inelastic collision ma’am..

And why is it perfectly inelastic, Frizal? Its is perfectly inelastic, ma’am because the book did
not bounce at all or all of its kinetic energy was lost.
Very good Frizal!
Now again class, what are the three types of The three types of collision are elastic, inelastic and
collision? Yes Mark? perfectly inelastic collision ma’am!
Well done Mark!

Now class, from your activity, what factors have Answers:

a great effects in the collision of marbles? Mass
Velocity
Right class, collision involves mass and
velocity and we call that Momentum.

Class! Momentum is mass in motion. therefore,

we can assume that heavier objects have greater
momentum. However, light objects can also
have as much momentum as a heavy objects
depending on its velocity.

m v + m v = m v ´+ m v
1 1 2 2 1 1 2 2
´
Now for our next activity today, I want you to
use that formula in our problem.

G. Application

Class, please work with your pair in answering

this sample problem.
Given:
A 300 g cart moves on an air track at 1.2 m/s. It M1= 300 g – 0.3 kg
collides with and sticks to another cart of mass V1= 1.2 m/s
500g which was stationary before collision. M2= 500 g – 0.5 kg
What is the velocity of the combined cart after V2= 0 m/s
collision?

I will only be given you 5 minutes to do this.

Are you done? Now may I ask Moriah to show ( Showing their solution)
their solutions. Answer: 0.45m/s
Values Integration

So class, is collision important in our life? May I

ask Kim Jun? Jun, what do you think it is? Through understanding collision ma’am, we can
prevent road accidents.
Well you have a point Kim Jun. So through
understanding how collision works, we can
reduce road accidents!

So class that is all for today. Thank you for your

participation.
