What’s new in SAP HANA 2.

0
SAP HANA 2.0 is introduced in November 2016. It is a next-generation data management platform having
the capability to drive digital transformation.

SPS Release strategy–

After SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 02, there will be only 1 SPS release every year, earlier they used to release 2
SPS/year. In addition, its maintenance will be valid for 2 years from SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 02 release.

End of maintenance for SAP HANA 1.0 SPS 12 will be valid until May 2021.
Like, the last SPS of HANA 2.0 will have a 5-year long-term maintenance.
System Replication–

1. Multi-Target system replication support– HANA started supporting multi-target system replication from
HANA 2.0 SPS 03. With this, we can achieve data replication on the local as well as the remote secondary
system. Primary system can replicate data to the local secondary system [i.e. residing on same data center].
In addition, it can replicate data to the remote secondary system [i.e. residing on other data center which
may be located in different geography].
2. Active/Active read enabled system replication support– In the regular scenario, read-write operations
happen on the primary database only. With active-active read enabled configuration, the queries which have
only SQL read operations involved can be run against the secondary database. This will free up resources on
the primary site and make use of idling resources [i.e. the secondary database].

Data will be continuously shipping to secondary system from primary system,

So there will be always live data available into secondary system as delay
Between primary and secondary system ranges from 1-15 seconds.
SAP HANA Execution Engine [HEX]–

From SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 02, SAP has introduced SAP HANA Execution Engine which initially supporting basic
SQL queries. This newly introduced execution engine is supposed to replace other available engines in SAP
HANA like join engine, OLAP engine, etc.

Currently, SAP has the various engines for the variety of tasks. Eventually, HEX will simplify this to some
extent..

Multi-tenant Database Container [MDC]–

Once you upgrade your system to SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 01, your system’s operational mode will be only MDC
and your system will no longer single container system.

Persistence Store Encryption–

HANA 2.0 supports persistence store [log volume] encryption.

Consolidated Log Backup–

Using consolidated log backup, SAP HANA can write multiple log segments of a service to a single log
backup. This will significantly improve the log backups in below scenarios.

In high load period, log segment generation rate will be higher. Log segment will not be cleared until it gets
backed up. In this situation, it is highly likely that the log area may become full results in a system freeze. In
such a situation, consolidated log backup will help to avoid excessive log area growth to keep system
availability intact.
