CHRISTOPHER MARLOWE

Marlowe, the second and eldest son of John and Catherine Marlowe, was born on Feb
26,1564(baptized), in Canterbury. Father- a shoe-maker, early education at King’s School (entered Jan
14,1579), a year later, went to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge obtaining his bachelor degree of arts in
1584, intending to take Anglican orders. In 1587, the University hesitated to give him master’s degree.
Its doubts (perhaps arising from his frequent absences, or speculations that perhaps he had converted
to Roman Catholicism, and would soon attend college elsewhere) were apparently set at rest or
dismissed when the Privy council sent a letter declaring that Marlowe had been engaged in Elizabeth I’s
service, and was awarded his master’s degree on schedule.
