ASSIGNMENT 1

Ethical Issues of Internet of Thing (IoT)

Introduction

The development of technology is rapidly increasing over time. Now, various equipment /
machines have been equipped with technology that can facilitate our daily lives. From smart cars
that can drive themselves to various destinations without a human driver, to smart machines like
Alexa that can remind you to do activities on schedule. All of these tools are of course connected
to the internet so that they can do their job properly. A smartphone is an example of a device that
we use frequently and is almost connected to the internet every day. Even smartphone users have
reached 5.11 billion in 2019. This is not surprising because every year there are many new
smartphones that sell well as technology develops. With so many users like that, today's society
seems more enthusiastic about technological developments.
According to data from We Are Social, the number of internet users in the world in 2019
reached 4.39 billion, an increase of 9 percent from the previous year. Not only internet users are
increasing, the content that is accessed or needed by internet users is also increasing. With so many
internet users and bandwidth requests, of course we need internet access fast enough to cover all
the needs of internet users. This is also for technological developments such as smart cars or cars
with autopilot features because cars like this require enormous data processing capabilities and fast
response time speeds are needed to mimic human reflex time.
Therefore, 5G generation of mobile internet connectivity technology has been developed to
solve these problems. The 5G network is expected to be able to connect almost all aspects that are
around us with a network that is very fast, very reliable, and very responsive. 5G will enable us to
exploit the full potential of advanced technology such as artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality,
and the Internet of Things (IoT) with internet speeds up to 100 times faster than 4G.
Behind the benefits of 5G there are apparently some controversial issues that are not good
for our lives. Many people say that the large frequency signals coming from the 5G network are not
good for health and with the faster transmission of data from one device to another, will our personal
data be safely stored on our device? Will this presence of 5G cause new ethical issues?
Ethical Issues and Dilemma
There are several ethical issues and problems regarding the application of 5g technology,
especially in the field of health and privacy security. The reason why many people worry about the
impact of 5G on their health is because the frequency used by 5G is very high, which lies between
30Ghz to 300Ghz. 5G technology causes radio frequency radiation or radiofrequency radiation
(RFR). More than 215 scientists from 40 different countries have called for the United Nations to
take immediate action to reduce exposure to EMF (electromagnetic fields) emitted from wireless
sources. These scientists also sent a letter to the FCC, asking the body to consider health risks and
environmental problems before quickly deploying 5th generation wireless infrastructure.

Because of its high frequency characteristics, this 5G Signal has a shorter range than the
4G network. Therefore, it takes a lot of antennas to be installed close together to be able to receive
a clear 5G signal. Because it requires density, 5G is feasible especially for denser areas, where many
antennas can be placed close together.
