FACULTY OF NURSING
UNIVERSITY OF RIAU
2019
This is a story about two and a half years ago, quite a long journey. My name is Grace,
usually called cookie. When I was in 5th grade, I was very excited with all the activities that
would come like a picnic. Then after that I went to the hospital and did a blood test and then the
results came out which showed that I had cancer. My parents and I continued to think positively
then after that I went back and forth to the hospital to do further tests and do chemo.

For every chemo I do I do a lot of things on chemo first many friends who come to visit
me, I am very grateful that many friends and family visit me. There is plenty of free time at the
hospital and also crafts and music. I go home and cut my hair and even if I lose all my hair later
let me cut it.

On the second chemo we made various kinds of handicrafts, when my chirstmas came
home and family and friends gathered. We danced and it made me feel better, after that I
returned to the hospital for stem-cell harvest.

On the third chemo there is more music being played and also we are playing cards.

On the four Chemo I attended music, arts, crafts classes, for about a week at three
o'clock I went home and returned to the hospital to check on my condition. I am happy with the
snowstorm because I can gather with my family and on weekends I go home to celebrate
valentine together. After that go back to the hospital to do a scan and prepare for surgery.

It's time for surgery to remove the tumor.

I am glad the tumor was removed. I brought my rosary beads and asked my surgeon to
hold them during the operation. I also asked him to record the operation when the tumor was
removed. After a few days I was able to go home, at home I played ukulele. for a week I
commute to hospital almost three times a week for transfusions. Six weeks later I returned for a
scan and the results were stable but there was no change. Therapy does not really eliminate and
cure my pain. I told myself that you have no choice but to be strong but you can choose to be
happy and think positive and that's what I did so I made more arts and crafts, at that time I
graduated from fifth grade I was 11 years old and the whole fifth grade celebrated, I lost some
hearing because of chemo, but then I got it back with a hearing aid. My doctor told me that they
no longer took care to cure me. My wish, I really wanted to meet Pope Franciscus in the
meantime I went to another hospital where I met some extraordinarily evil nurses, but the
hospital said there was nothing they could do. After all that I want to drive a duck boat then go
to Sloan Kettering, at the apple store they have edible arts and crafts there. I did a PET scan
there and met with Dr. Modak and he said he thought there was one more thing we could try
immunotherapy but at first he wanted me to undergo a high dose of chemo. My original doctors
didn't think it was a good idea they thought it was too risky because I no longer got stem cells
transplant. I swam at the end of the summer. I had just had surgery and last swam in November.
But it's OK that I can still do other creative things like dancing, knitting and also making crafts.
On Friday night I returned to the hospital with an ambulance. I thought it was pretty cool with
the lights they turned on and I played more music. Now more chemotherapy and scans.
Sometimes it doesn't feel critsmash already dean and I want to see a tree in the center of
rockfeller or dance. every second it was pope francis who kissed me on the head which is a life-
changing journey thank you micah hope i come back from a trip that is replenished and ready to
fight and that's what we do we prepare and i am immunotherapy in phase one study funded only
by donations and that is a very difficult treatment with a lot of support I continue to stay strong
happy and I am back for the second round I have scanned but we were told to see any
improvements actually to make sure that there was no progress in the disease I was an
ambassador for the Sloan-Kettering Stop & Shop program and I had to help start the program
but gave a speech and I found out finally after a year and- a-half Significant improvement so I
was sent for proton radiation therapy to get a little dancing and meet some truly extraordinary
people I had to leave in the morning and in the afternoon so we found a way to spend time
between hi honey how are you i eat fine on Harris you Debbie what is your name a doctor do you
need pain medication what is your pain scale from one to ten i have to celebrate again my 12th
year.there is no evidence of disease.

Thank you doctor modak for giving me hope when others could't.
