Service Learning Summary

I did my service learning hours at Sunrise Hospital. I was a volunteer there Summer of

2016 because I needed 150 hours to earn a credit in high school, but after getting the hours that I

needed I stayed there for longer because I enjoyed doing it. I stopped volunteering towards the

end of my senior year of high school because I had to focus on graduation, college applications,

and scholarships. It was nice to comeback there, and continue what I started before.

October 1st of 2017 when the major tragedy happened here in Las Vegas. When I heard

the news, and I found out that there was a lot of people shot and wounded, I was heartbroken. I

knew that the hospitals around the area would be so busy. I knew that they're going to need as

many help as they can get, so I stepped up and went to the hospital Tuesday - October 3rd. I was

there from 6:00 am to 6:30 pm. I didn't even think about just completing my service hours, I was

just genuinely wanted to help out and give back to the community.

When I got there Tuesday morning, there was a lot of donations coming in already, so I

helped out taking in the items and organizing them. After that, I was at the front desk of the

hospital guiding the patient's family to where their loved ones are staying in. The system wasn't

new to me, and so I didn't have a hard time learning what I'm supposed to do. Lastly, and my

favorite part of my experience, there was comfort dogs at the hospitals. I guided the owner of the

dogs, and the dogs themselves to the areas and rooms they can come in to. It was so nice seeing
everyone coming in together as community and helping out one another. And the dogs, it seems

like they're not doing much, but I could definitely see the smile that they bring to the family

members of the patients.

I learned that it does not matter how big or small you're trying to help because what

matter is you're doing something to help. For me, I think I gave and tried my best to help out as

much as I can. I also learned that even though our society now is divided to multiple social

groups, everyone learned how to put that aside and helped each other out. It didn't matter if the

person they are helping is not a family member or a friend, they still took their time, money, and

effort to help those who needed their help. Overall, this is service learning activity is so

memorable to me, and it's something I won't forget.
