CHARACTER  BREAK  DOWN

GARGAMEL
-‐ Male.  (character  plays  40-‐50,  but  with  make  up  actor  could  be  late  20’s-‐40’s)
-‐ Strong  comedic  actor/singer  with  physical  comedy  skills.
-‐ Baritone  with  a  good  sense  of  musicality.
-‐ Preferred  height  is  5’10”  or  above,  and  slight  to  medium  build.

Gargamel  is  a  nasty,  sneaky  and  hypocritical  wizard  who  lives
in  a  dark  horrible  cottage  in  the  heart  of  the  forest  with  his  cat
Azrael.  He  is  hell-‐bent  on  capturing  and/or  destroying  the
Smurfs,  and  his  obsession  with  this  idea  is  his  primary
motivation.  His  pet  cat  Azrael  is  forced  to  listen  to  his  ill
conceived  plans  on  a  daily  basis.  Fortunately  for  the  Smurfs,  he
is  also  rather  stupid  and  inept.  In  all  these  years  he  still  can’t
find  the  Smurf  Village,  and  his  “genius”  evil  plans  most  often
backfire  in  grand  style.

He  is  the  classic  Vaudevillian  comedic  villain.

Candidates  should  prepare  the  attached  audition  scripts  and  songs,  and  will  be
taught  a  short  dance/movement  routine  on  the  day.

MOTHER  NATURE
-‐ Female  (character  plays  35-‐50,  but  with  make-‐up  and  costume  actor  could  be
20’s-‐40’s).  Actors  of  all  body  shapes  are  encouraged  to  audition.  Preferred
height  is  5’6”  and  above.
-‐ Strong  character  actor  with  excellent  singing  voice.
-‐ Mezzo  with  strong  belt  able  to  sing  in  soul  and  disco  styles  (with  ability  to
switch  to  a  light  classical  sound  where  required)
-‐ Good  sense  of  comedy  and  ability  to  create  a  naturally  likeable  and  warm
character.

Mother  Nature  is  kind  hearted,  warm,  embracing  and  loving
to  all  creatures.  She  lives  in  a  magical  tree  house  deep  in  the
forest  with  her  animal  and  plant  friends.  She  is  jovial  and  fun
and  enjoys  nothing  more  than  a  good  laugh,  finding  joy  and
humour  in  everything.  She  is  extremely  busy  in  her  job,  which
may  make  her  seem  distracted  or  absent  minded.  However,
underneath  this  somewhat  humble  motherly  exterior  is  a
force  of  nature  not  to  be  reckoned  with.

She  is  generally  well  spoken  and  her  words  are  well  considered,  and  she  has  a  rather
matronly  feel,  so  should  be  played  older.  However  there  is  an  obvious  cheeky
quirkiness  and  an  underlying  sense  of  never  ending  youth.  Like  the  world’s  coolest
grandmother  of  sorts,  who  can  sing  a  soul  disco  number  to  boot!

THE  SMURFS
-‐ Male  and  female  dancer/actors  with  a  flair  for  physical  storytelling.
-‐ Ideal  height  5’0”  –  5’5”  (MUST  NOT  BE  TALLER  THAN  5’5”)
-‐ Performers  will  be  manipulating  mascot  style  character  costumes  (faces  fully
covered),  and  controlling  the  mouth  and  eye  movements  manually  to  a  pre-‐
recorded  voice  track.
-‐ Physically  strong  dancers.  Sharp,  punchy  and  able  to  execute  exaggerated
movements  with  strength.
-‐ We  are  looking  for  dancers  who  are  able  to  create  a  nuanced  character  with
humour  and  understanding.  Ability  to  express  clearly  through  gesture,
posture  and  movement  to  bring  the  character  to  life.

We  are  casting  the  following  Smurf  characters:

Papa  Smurf  is  the  village  chief.  He  was  542  years  old  last  spring.
You’ll  recognise  him  by  his  white  beard  and  red  clothes.  He’s  a
wise  old  Smurf,  who  tries  as  much  as  he  can  to  stop  the  Smurfs
acting  like  crude  humans.  Being  an  experienced  alchemist,  he
often  saves  the  Smurfs  from  danger  using  his  knowledge.
Thoughtful,  wise,  father  figure,  but  energetic  and  friendly.

The  Smurfette  was  originally  created  by  the  horrible  wizard

Gargamel  to  cause  trouble  amongst  the  Smurfs.  With  a  big  nose
and  wild  hair,  she  didn’t  originally  look  like  much.  Using  his
alchemy  and  knowledge,  Papa  Smurf  transformed  her  into  the
charming  Smurfette  that  melts  the  hearts  of  the  other  Smurfs.
She’s  one  of  a  kind,  full  of  feminine  grace  and  frivolous.  She  can
also  be  very  much  a  woman,  playing  with  the  feelings  of  her
sweethearts.

Brainy  is  a  bit  of  a  know-‐it-‐all,  and  the  only  Smurf  to  take
everything  seriously!  Brainy  spends  his  time  preaching  to  others,
stupidly  mumbling  old  quotes.  Whatever  Papa  Smurf  says  is,  for
him,  absolutely  sacred.  And  he’s  a  notorious  telltale,  something
that  earns  him  a  regular  whack  of  a  mallet  on  the  head.  Even
though  his  friends  like  him,  they  think  he  can  be  a  real  pain  in
the  smurf  sometimes!

Vanity  has  a  flower  in  his  bonnet  and  a  mirror  in  his  hand,  and  is
the  Smurf  who  cares  the  most  about  his  appearance.  Delicate
and  sensitive,  he  spends  his  time  talking  fabrics  with  Smurfette
and  keeping  his  complexion  fresh.  If,  by  accident,  his  mirror
breaks,  he  is  the  unhappiest  Smurf.

Hefty  by  name,  and  hefty  by  nature!  Hefty  is  easily  spotted  as  he
has  a  heart  tattooed  on  his  arm.  He  keeps  fit  by  practicing  just
about  every  sport.  If  something  difficult  has  to  be  done,  you  can
count  on  him.  Even  though  he’s  a  bit  of  a  bumpkin,  he’s  always
ready  to  lend  a  hand.

Grouchy  is  the  one  and  only  grouchy  Smurf.  No  matter  what  you
say  or  suggest,  he  will  be  against  it  on  principle.  From  his  corner,
he  interrupts  the  others  with  systematically  negative  comments
such  as:  “I  hate  that”.  On  the  face  of  it,  you’d  think  he  likes  no
one  or  anything.  But  deep  down,  he  has  a  heart  of  gold.

Harmony  thinks  he  is  the  musician  of  the  village,  and  can  be
most  often  found  with  his  trusty  trumpet  in  hand.  Unfortunately
the  only  sound  he  seems  to  be  able  to  get  out  of  it  are  deafening
QUAAACKS  and  SCREEEEECHES  -‐  to  the  horror  of  his
companions.    As  a  true  music  fan,  Harmony  just  loves  to  play  any
instrument  he  can  find,  although  he  is  not  much  better  at  any  of
them  either.  When  he  gets  hold  of  one,  even  a  music  box  plays
  out  of  key!

Clumsy  is  super  nice  and  sometimes  overly  enthusiastic  about

helping.  Unfortunately  he  is  naturally,  well…  clumsy.  The  other
smurfs  are  used  to  his  slips  and  falls.  If  there  is  a  way  for
something  to  go  wrong,  Clumsy  will  find  it,  although  it  never
seems  to  stop  him  from  trying.  Ironically,  or  perhaps  perfectly,
he  is  Brainy’s  best  friend.

Candidates  should  wear  appropriate  dance  gear  and  be  prepared  to  learn  a  dance
routine  on  the  day.

Candidates  must  prepare  their  own  lip  sync  style  character  performance  to  the
supplied  audio  track.  Performer’s  should  interpret  the  recorded  vocal  performance
and  use  it  to  create  a  physical  character  with  nuance,  detail  and  humour  (essentially
creating  a  suit  character  without  the  suit).  It  is  a  character  acting  exercise,  not  a
choreography/dance  routine.
