The Lenbachhaus is a museum in München, Germany. It is the former house of the painter

Franz von lenbach where he painted many different portraits of nobility. It houses a number of

different pieces by the blauer reiter group and has gained an international reputation because of

it.

The exhibit german expressionism has 8 different items in it; among them are Rose Garden

(Klee 1920) made with oil, pen, and ink on paper, based on first impressions it doesn’t look like

a rose garden, and honestly I never would’ve guessed it was one unless I saw the title. Upon

closer inspection, you notice several houses, roses (although not in bushes), and a flag of some

sort on one of the houses in the top middle. It is drawn in a mix of cubism and circular strokes. It

has a very sunset like colour scheme to it and because of this, I can only assume that Klee was

trying to illustrate it to take place at this time.

Another painting in the german expressionism exhibit is Impression III (concert) created by

Wassily Kandinsky in 1911. It is a more abstract piece in that nothing in it is clearly what it is (if

that makes sense). I really had to look close at both the title and the painting itself to figure out

remotely what it’s supposed to be. It features (what I can only assume is) people lining up for a

concert of some sort. I noticed a building in the far left of the painting that the people are either

lining up to get into or get out of. It features a lot of yellow (which is probably light) and was

made with oil.

Rose garden and Impression III (concert) are very similar paintings if one was to merely glance

at them in that they both look abstract. While they are both abstract, Impression III (concert) is

much more abstract than rose garden. In Rose Garden one can relatively easily make out

buildings and roses, in Impression III (concert) one really has to observe and stretch their ideas

of what a person looks like to notice the people lining up outside a building. Rose garden is

more of a monochromatic and reserved piece in style while Impression III (concert) is more

polychromatic and free in style.
