 Domestic Ventilation Introduction

An Introduction Use this formula to select the fan that you require.

ACTOM Mechanical Equipment offers a wide range E.g. L x W x H = m³ x Airchanges required =

of extractor fans which are imported products of very
high quailty. XPELAIR offers different fan variations
suitable to be mounted on the ceiling, windows or
walls for extraction purposes.
Extraction is necessary in rooms where ventilation is
poor and stale or stagnant air needs to be eliminated
and replaced with fresh air.
STEP 1:
The first step in selecting the correct extractor fan is
to decide where the extraction fan needs to be
mounted: (through the ceiling, through the window
or through the wall?)
m³ per hour (m³/h) required.
Use this catalogue to select the fan that meets your
satisfaction - mounting, style, type and performance
of the unit.
Please note: that it is VERY important that there is
always fresh air coming into the room freely (through
a door grille, open windows, space underneath the
door, etc.) in order for air to be extracted.
Failing to ensure that there is a supply of fresh air
into the room may cause the fan motor to fail and
even burn out.

STEP 2: The extract point should always be located as high

The next step is to establish what the VOLUME of
the room is, from which the fan must extract.
E.g. Bathroom of 2.7m Height, 4m Wide, 3m Long
=2.7m x 4m x 3m = 32.4m³
STEP 3:
Now that you have established what the VOLUME of
the room is, you need to decide how many times per
hour the fans needs to replace the air. In other
words, how many air changes are necessary to
ventilate the room sufficiently.
Use the below table to determine how many air
changes will be required:

Axial vs Centrifugal?
Axial fans are most appropriate for extraction directly
to the outside through a wall or window. However, if
the window or wall faces a prevailing wind such as in
coastal areas, exposed hills or high rise applications,
a centrifugal fan, which has a higher pressure
performance, is more suitable to overcome these
outside conditions. Centrifugal fans are ideal for
flexible ducted applications or smooth more ducting
for longer distances.
