1. a) For a three phase synchronous generator, evaluate Vd , Vq , Vo when it is open circuited 8

with the field winding carrying a constant magnitude direct current. Also evaluate the
currents in the d - coil, q - coil and the dampers along the two axes in this case. After a
3-phase symmetrical short circuit, allowing all the settlement, work out these currents in
term of the machine parameters.

b) Write the matrix equation for flux linkages of synchronous machine. Explain each term 6
clearly. Also write the equations for stator and rotor self inductances. Why rotor self
inductances are constant?
OR

2. a) Draw phasor diagram for a salient pole alternator for leading power factor delivering rated 8
load current such that    . Neglect armature resistance comment on the d - axis
component of armature current in this case.

b) Explain an experimental method to determine the zero sequence reactance of a 6

synchronous machine.

3. a) Explain the Park's transformations to change a - b - c variables to d - q variables. Show 7

that condition of power invariance is satisfied.

b) While transforming to the d - q - 0 system. The system inductance are related as follows. 7
Ld  La  Ms  (3 / 2) Lm
Lq  La  Ms  (3 / 2) Lm
Explain these terms for a synchronous machine.

OR

4. a) Draw the equivalent circuit along axis of a synchronous machine and explain the 9
following relationship.
L  LE  2LAO
Ld  Ld  D

LFLO L2AD  1
The inductance terms relate to the coils of machine and have their usual meanings.

X0  0.10 p.u., Xd  1.1 p.u., Xq  0.70 p.u.
If its rating is 100 MVA and 13.2 kV (star). Find these reactance in ohms. If this machine
is operating at a power angle of 30º. Find its power delivered in M H at unity p.f. and in
per unit.

5. a) Explain modeling of a Prime mover is done for steam turbine. 7

r  0.169  / mi,   2.093 mu / mi
c  0.01427 f / mi, g  0
The transmission line delivers 40 MW at 132 kV. With 95% power factor lagging find the
sending end voltage and current also find transmission line efficiency.

reactance of 0.80 ohm refer to primary. Express its per unit reactance with primary.
Parameters taken as base valves. Evaluate the same in term of secondary parameters as base
valves.
