IV SEMESTER
A.C.MACHINES
(Effective from the admitted batch 2012–13)
Time: 3 Hours Max.Marks: 60
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Instructions: Each Unit carries 12 marks.
Answer all units choosing one question from each unit.
All parts of the unit must be answered in one place only.
Figures in the right hand margin indicate marks allotted.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UNIT-I
1. a) State the effects of increasing rotor resistance on starting current,
starting torque, maximum torque and full-load slip of an induction
motor 6
b) A 36 kW, 3-phase, 4-pole, 50 Hz induction motor has a full-load
efficiency of 84 percent. The friction and windage losses are
one-third of the no-load losses and rotor copper losses equal the
iron loss at full-load. Find the full-load speed. Neglect the stator
resistance 6
OR
2. How would you determine circle diagram of a 3-phase induction
motor experimentally? What are the quantities that could be
predetermined from circle diagram? 12
UNIT-II
3. a) Explain what is meant by the split-phase method of motor starting 6
b) Describe double field revolving theory using vector diagrams 6
OR
4. a) Describe clearly the operation of a shaded pole motor 6
b) The resistance and inductive reactance of each winding of a
50-Hz split-phase induction motor are 80 and 237.5
respectively. Additional resistance R and condenser C are in
series with one winding. Calculate their values to give the
same current in each winding with a phase difference of 90o 6
UNIT-III
5. a) Derive an expression for distribution factor of a winding having
q slots per pole per phase and a slot angle of  and also describe
its effect 6
b) A 3.3 kV, 3-phase star-connected alternator has a full-load current
of 100 A. Under short-circuit condition it takes 5 A field current
to produce full-load short-circuit current. The e.m.f. on open
circuit for the same excitation is 900 V (line-to-line). The armature
resistance is 0.9/phase. Determine synchronous reactance per
phase and regulation for (i) 0.8 p.f. lagging (ii) 0.8 p.f. leading 6
OR
6. a) Explain the phenomena of armature reaction in alternators 6
b) Calculate the r.m.s. value of the induced e.m.f. per phase of a
10-pole, 3-, 50 Hz alternator with 2 slots per pole per phase
and 4 conductors per slot in two layers. The coil span is 150 o.
The flux per pole has a fundamental component of 0.12 Wb
and a 20% third harmonic component 6
UNIT-IV
7. a) What is the necessity of parallel operation of alternators? State
the requirements for paralleling alternators 6
b) A 3 MVA, 6-pole alternator runs at 1000 r.p.m. in parallel with
other machines on 3.3 kV bus-bars. The synchronous reactance
is 20%. Calculate the synchronizing power per one mechanical
degree of displacement and the corresponding synchronizing
torque 6
OR
8. a) Draw the phasor diagrams of an alternator at unity, lagging and
leading power factors 6
b) Two 60 MVA, 3-phase alternators operate in parallel. The
settings of the governors are such that the rise in speed from
full-load to no-load is 2% in one machine and 3% in the other,
the characteristics being straight lines in both cases. If each
machine is fully loaded when the total load is 120 MW, what
will be the load on each machine when the total load is reduced
to 80 MW 6
UNIT-V
9. a) Discus the effect of varying excitation of synchronous motor
under constant load. Explain the circumstances leading a
synchronous motor to work as an ideal synchronous condenser 6
b) A 200 V, 3-phase star-connected synchronous motor has an
effective resistance and synchronous reactance of 0.2 and 2.2
respectively. The input is 800 kW at normal voltage and the
induced line e.m.f. is 2500 V. Calculate the line current and
power factor 6
OR
10. a) Draw and explain the phasor diagram of a synchronous motor
operating at:
i) lagging power factor ii) leading power factor 6
b) An industrial plant has a load of 800 kW at a power factor of
0.8 lagging. It is desired to purchase a synchronous motor of
sufficient capacity to deliver a load of 200 kW and also serve to
correct the overall plant power factor to 0.92. Assuming that the
synchronous motor has an efficiency of 92%, determine its kVA
input rating and power factor at which it will operate 6
