DEVELOPING THE HABIT OF
PERSONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

“The level of your personal growth and development determines

the level of your effectiveness as a teacher.”

“When you know better you do better.” – Maya Angelou

The Seven (7) Keys To Developing The Habit Of Personal Growth And Development?

1. DESIRE

“Every significant accomplishment begins with a DESIRE.”

2. MOTIVATION

The Three Levels Of MOTIVATIONS:

MOTIVATION WHAT EACH LEVEL MEANS DESIRED RESULT

PAIN The Avoidance Of The Undesirable SURVIVAL

PLEASURE Cravings For The Desirable SUCCESS

PURPOSE The Pursuit Of Meaning SIGNIFICANCE

3. GOALS

“He replied…‘I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow,
and on the third day I will reach my goal.’”
― Luke 13:32(NIV)

2
“We are a goal-seeking organism; our mind works diligently when we visualize what we
are trying to accomplish.”

4. SELF-DISCIPLINE

“SELF-DISCIPLINE means, doing what you should do even if you don’t feel like doing it
until you get used to it.”

The Habits Every Teacher Needs To Develop:

 READING

“A teacher who doesn’t read is no better off that the student who can’t read.”

“Some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and
digested thoroughly.”
― Francis Bacon

 ASKING

“It’s better to ask questions and look foolish for a minute than not to ask questions in
order to look brilliant and be foolish forever.”

 LISTENING / WATCHING

“When I’m doing nothing I’m reading; when I’m doing something not so important
I’m listening or watching.”

 EVALUATING / REFLECTING

“Evaluated experiences are among the best teachers not simply having experiences.”

 RECORDING

“The wise store up knowledge…” ― Proverbs 10:14 (NIV)

“A short pencil is better than a long memory.” ― Unknown

3
5. TOOLS AND RESOURCES

“The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get
understanding.”
― Proverbs 4:7 (NIV)

“If we encounter a man of rare intellect, we should ask him what books he reads.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Beware of the person of one book” ― Thomas Aquinas

“A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education.”

― Theodore Roosevelt

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us
realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do
what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”
― 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)

“Read the Bible every day. Meditate on it day and night so that you may be careful to do
everything written in it, then your life will become prosperous and successful.”
― Joshua 1:8 (NIV)

6. ASSOCIATION ON PURPOSE

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

― Proverbs 27:17 (NIV)

“9 Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: 10 If either
of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one
to help them up. 11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one
keep warm alone? 12 Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A
cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
― Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NIV)

“Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’”

― 1 Corinthians 15:33 (NIV)

KINDS OF PEOPLE WE MUST SURROUND OURSELVES WITH:

PASSIONATE

OPTILISTIC

SECURE

INSPIRING

TRUSTWORTHY

INQUISITIVE

VALUES-DRIVEN (MORAL)

ENCOURAGER

BENEFITS OF ASSOCIATING WITH THE RIGHT PEOPLE:

a. It intensifies Our Desire For Growth.

b. It Challenges us
c. It Sharpens Us.

7. IMMEDIATE OUTLET

“For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the Lord, and to do it and to teach his
statutes and rules in Israel.”
― Ezra 7:10 (ESV)

“The best way to maximize learning in attending a seminar or training is to have the goal
of immediately teaching others about what you’ve learned.”

The Benefits Of Having A Goal Of Teaching Someone About What You Have Learned:

a. It increases the possibility of APPLICATION.

5
b. It increases the rate of RETENTION.

2
GAINING STUDENTS’ RESPECT

“Students listen to the teachers they respect;

When there is no respect there is no room for learning.”

Principle-Based Approach To Gaining Respect:

1. Show That You CARE.

“Your students don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

How can you communicate to your students that you care about them?

a. Memorize their NAMES.

b. Ask questions that show INTEREST.

c. EMPHATIZE.

d. Listen ATTENTIVELY.

e. Remember important DATES.

f. Do home VISITATION.

g. If it is possible and you’re able, identify a NEED and MEET it.

h. PRAY for them and pray with them.

2. Act RESPECTABLY.

You can’t expect others to respect you if you don’t act or behave respectably.”

Here are the practical suggestions how to act respectably:

a. DEMONSTRATE Respect Intentionally;

6
b. Dress APPROPRIATELY;

c. Guard your WORDS;

d. WATCH your gestures;

e. Don’t play FAVORITISM obviously;

f. Be a man or woman of INTEGRITY.

“They may call you ma’am or sir, greet you good morning, afternoon or evening,
answer you when you ask them, but if you have integrity problem they whisper
silently saying, you are nothing.”

"If I try to use human influence and strategies and tactics of how to get other people
to do what I want, to work better, to be more motivated, to like me and each other -
while my character is fundamentally flawed, marked by duplicity or insincerity - then,
in the long run, I cannot be successful. My duplicity will build distrust, and
everything I do - even using so-called good human relations techniques - will be
perceived as manipulative." (Covey, 1989)

3. Execute CLASSROOM PROPERLY Properly.

“What gets rewarded gets repeated and what’s not reprimanded gets reprimanded as
well.”

“Disciplining your student is a great way in gaining respect. But the way you discipline
can make or break that respect.”

Sequential Guidelines For Effective Discipline:

a. INSTRUCTION;

b. WARNING or PRAISE;

c. EXECUTION;

d. REASSURANCE;

e. IMPARTATION

7
“When you discipline your students to the things they need to do, they will develop the
character they need to become the adults God wants them to be.”

3
BUILDING A HEALTY SELF-ESTEM

“If a person’s self-esteem is acute, he may even think

he doesn’t deserve to be happy or successful.”
—Dr. David Field, Christian Psychologist

“A teacher whose self-esteem is unhealthy will find it difficult to build his or her students’ self-
esteem”

THE PRIMARY CAUSES OF A POOR SELF-ESTEM:

1. Lack Of Parental LOVE And ACCEPTANCE;

2. Growing Up In A BROKEN FAMILY;

3. Living with a NAGGING Mother And a HARSH Father;

4. NEGATIVE Words From Parents Or Other People;

5. PHYSICAL/SEXUAL Abuse;

6. COMPARISON;

7. FALSE Doctrine;

6. UNFULFILLED / UNHAPPY

STEPS IN BUILDING HEALTHY SELF-ESTEEM

1. Understand That Your Real Worth As A Person Is Based On How God Sees You.

The Six Principles That Determine Real Value In Life:

a. RARITY – The rarer a thing, the greater the value;

b. ABILITY – The greater the ability the greater the value;

c. OWNERSHIP – The value of a thing is determined by who owns it.

d. BID – The value of a thing depends on who is willing and how much he is willing to

pay for it.

e. CREATOR’S MASTERPIECE – The greatest masterpiece of a great artist has the

greatest value.

9

INTEGRATING MORAL VALUES IN EVERY SUBJECT

“Teaching academic subjects help students to succeed in school,

but integrating moral values enable them to succeed in life.”

“The key to a better world – kinder and nicer people, integrity in affairs, dignity and respect for
others, and sacrosanctity of human life – is an education that passes these values from one
generation to the next.”
– Stanford E. Angion

“Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.”

– Aristotle

“Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of education.”

– Martin Luther King, Jr.

“To educate a person in the mind, but not in morals is to educate a menace to society.”
–Theodore Roosevelt

“Education without values, as useful as it is, seems rather to make man a more clever devil.”
– C.S. Lewis

“Teaching should be such that what is offered is perceived as a valuable gift and not as a hard
duty. Never regard study as duty, but as the enviable opportunity to learn to know the liberating
influence of beauty in the realm of the spirit for your own personal joy and to the profit of the
community to which your later work belongs.”
– Albert Einstein

WHO WAS THE TEACHER WHO MADE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT IMPACT IN
YOUR LIFE THAT MADE YOU OF WHAT YOU ARE TODAY?

VALUES ARE THE:

• Bases of judging what attitude or behavior is right or wrong, acceptable or unacceptable;

• Universal principles which govern and ought to govern people’s behavior;

• Ethical principles which a person struggles to realize and live (Esteban, 1990)

 Biblical Principles God wants us to put high priority upon above other things.

The Basic Human Values (United Nations Centre for Human Settlements, 2001, p.23)

 Truth

 Love

 Peace

 Right Conduct

 Non Violence

CORE VALUES (DepED Values Education Program, 1988)

1. Physical – Health and Harmony with Nature

2. Intellectual – Truth and Tolerance

3. Moral – Love and Goodness

4. Spiritual – Global Spirituality

5. Social – Peace and Justice

6. Economic – Sustainable Human Development

7. Political – Nationalism and Globalism

12
THE FOUNDATIONAL PRINCIPLES ON INTEGRATING MORAL VALUES IN
EVERY SUBJECT:

1. You cannot give something which you don’t have;

2. Values awareness & conviction increases the success rate of values integration;

3. Values integration is an art that should and can be mastered.

THE FOUR MAIN CATEGORIES OF VALUES:

1. Unconscious versus CONSCIOUS;

2. Aspirational versus ACTUAL;

3. Organizational versus PERSONAL;

4. Good versus BAD.

THE LEVELS OF LEARNING

1. INFORMATION – Knowledge

2. INTERNALIZATION – Understanding/Conceptualization

3. INTEGRATION – Wisdom/Application

The sequence of effective sermon delivery, which is very much applicable in classroom teaching:

1. EXPLANATION

2. ILLUSTRATION

3. APPLICATION

TRAINING STUDENTS FOR REAL LIFE SUCCESS
“Every person was born a winner, but in order to win in life,
one must believe he could win and then prepare & train to win.”

“Train up a child in the way he should go,

And when he is old he will not depart from it”
-Proverbs 22:6

THE ULTIMATE KEY HUMAN FACTOR TO SUCCESS IS SELF-DISCIPLINE.

It means, doing what you should do even if you don’t feel like doing it until you get used to it.

In order for the students to be self-disciplined, teachers need to impose positive classroom
discipline consistent with the parental discipline at home.

THE TWO FOUNDATIONAL PRINCIPLES OF CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE:

1. What gets REWARDED gets repeated;

2. What’s not REPRIMANDED gets repeated as well.

SEQUENTIAL GUIDELINES FOR EFFECTIVE DISCIPLINE:

1. INSTRUCTION;

2. WARNING OR PRAISE;

3. EXECUTION;

14
4. REASSURANCE;

5. IMPARTATION.

THE BASIC SKILLS EVERY STUDENT NEEDS TO MASTER

1. Writing

2. Reading

3. Arithmetic

4. Reasoning

THE EIGHT IMPORTANT LIFE SKILLS EVERY PERSON MUST DEVELOP

IN ORDER TO SUCCEED IN LIFE

1. INTERPERSONAL Relationship

Six ways to make people like you according to Dale Carnegie:

a. Become genuinely interested in other people;
b. Smile;
c. Remember that a person’s name is to that person is the sweetest and most important
sound in any language;
d. Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves;
e. Talk in terms of other person’s interest;
f. Make the other people feel important – and do it sincerely.

2. INTRAPERSONAL Relationship

“Many people spend years in schools studying mathematics, biology, anatomy, law,
engineering, arts and science of teaching, philosophy, medicine, and other disciplines,
yet only very few spend time studying themselves”.

3. COMMUNICATION

“The most important lesson you could learn about communication is to seek first to
understand, then to be understood.”

15
“ My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow
to speak and slow to become angry.” - James 1:19

4. PROBLEM SOLVING

“Problems are a normal part of being alive, so get used to it and be very good at solving
it. If a difficulty has no solution, it is not a problem, it’s a fact of life. You just need to
accept it.”

“Every problem that does not totally destroy us makes us stronger.”

5. CREATIVE THINKING

“If what you will always do is what you have always done what you will always get is
what you have always gotten.”

6. MANAGEMENT

“Management is all about managing in the short term, while developing the plans for the
long term.” - Jack Welch

7. LEADERSHIP

According to Dr. John C. Maxwell, it is INFLUENCE, nothing more, nothing less. And
that everything rises and falls on it.

16
6
INSPIRING THE UNMOTIVATED STUDENTS

“INSPIRATION allows your students to learn and discover things

you’ve never known yourself, do things you’ve never done yourself and explore
and go to places you’ve never been and known yourself.
INSPIRATION enables your students to be better that you, their teacher.”

HOW TO INSPIRE THE UNMOTIVATED STUDENTS

1. Be absolutely convinced that there is a seed of GREATNESS in every person.

“Every individual has the native capacity to learn.” – Mila Banaag

2. Tell them of what they could become, revealing to them their own greatness.

“Other people’s opinion of you doesn’t have to be your reality.” – Les Brown’s Teacher

THE POWER OF WORDS

The kinds of words we must continually speak to our students:

a. Words That Instill CONFIDENCE.

“Sometimes, students need to barrow their teacher’s confidence in them until they
develop their unshakeable confidence in themselves.”

b. Words That Inspire To DREAM BIG

“A dream is an inspiring picture of the future that energizes your mind, will, and
emotions, empowering you to do everything you can, to achieve it.”
- John C. Maxwell

17
c. Words That ENCOURAGE To Keep Going.

"Inspiration and motivation are exactly like nutrition. You have to keep on taking it
daily, in healthy doses. Otherwise, depletion, fatigue, depression and lack of ambition
and achievement will very soon manifest themselves."
- Dr. Jan S. Marais

d. Words That Impart BLESSINGS.

“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
- Proverbs 18:21

“ The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings
healing.” - Proverbs 12:18

3. TREAT them as what they could and should be.

"Treat a man as he is and he will remain as he is. Treat a man as he can and should be
and he will become as he can and should be." – Goethe

18
7
ACTIVATING THE TEACHERS’ MOST VALUABLE TOOL – PRAYER

“Prayer is an invitation for God’s intervention in your situation.”

GUIDELINES FOR EFFECTIVE PRAYER (Matt. 6:5-15)

1. Pray PRIVATELY Not Publicly (5-6)

“5
“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the
synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have
received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and
pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret,
will reward you.”

2. Pray from the HEART not just from the head (7-8)

“7
And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be
heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what
you need before you ask him.”

3. Pray GRATEFULLY not grudgingly (9-10)

“9
“This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
10
your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

4. Pray SPECIFICALLY (11)

“11
Give us today our daily bread.”

19
“3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may
spend what you get on your pleasures.” - James 4:3
5. FORGIVE others (12-15)

“12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not
into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ 14 For if you forgive other people when
they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not
forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins”.

6. Pray in JESUS’ name

John 14:13-14 “13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may
be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”

Acts 4:12 “12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven
given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

1 John 1:9 “9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins
and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

1 John 2:1 “1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if
anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous
One.”

Mark 11:24 “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have
received it, and it will be yours.”

WHAT PRAYER CAN DO – A TRUE STORY.

Dr. Randolph Byrd, a cardiologist at the San Francisco General Hospital, conducted a research

project with 393 patients who had either had heart attacks or severe chest pains. People were

praying for 50% of these patients in a nearby city, without them being aware of it. It was later

established that those patients who were remembered in prayer had a lower death rate than the

others. These people required less medication, e.g. antibiotics and diuretics; were not connected

to breathing apparatus; and did not have to be intubated. Twelve of the patients who were not

being prayed for, however, required these procedures. This was a statically significant study.*
