1. Look at Rescher’s list of basic values at the opening of this chapter. Which of the eight
types of values are the most important, and why?
I think the most important type of value is the moral values. It is the set of principles
guiding us to evaluate what is right or wrong. The moral values make us a true person because
it shapes the character and personality of individuals. Other values will come after with the
moral values. Knowing what is right or wrong will help an individual improves his/her
decision-making power naturally. A person who is determined to follow a meaningful life
patiently follows morals values in his life without the fear of getting judged and hence stands
out in the crowd.
2. The section in this chapter on value and pleasure describes a Pleasure Machine. If you
could, would you live your life in the Pleasure Machine?

No, because pleasure machine is another addiction for a human being. It is like with
the alcohol, drugs and other addicted stuffs. We know that pleasure is just a temporary
happiness in a person. In a pleasure machine, it prevents people from experiencing pain that
should be normal to an individual.
3. The section in this chapter on the good life describes a Happiness Machine—an improved
version of the Pleasure Machine. If you could, would you live your life in the Happiness
Machine?

Same with the pleasure machine, I will not live also in the happiness machine because
it will never be a good feeling of having an instant happiness. Having happiness in life is good
if you really work hard for it. Choosing our own happiness base from our action is what an
individual must do. We want to accomplish things, even at the risk of failure. A person wants
to be something and someone. To know what his/her purpose in this world. It is shaping us of
what character we really are. Lastly, there are no real people in our happiness machine life. It
is all imagination that prevents people from creating relationship with them. We want to love
and be loved by real people.
