Why Do Some Sounds
Drive People Crazy?
COULD A SEEMINGLY innocent sound like some-
one chewing potato chips shoot up your heart rate
and send your brain into a frenzy as if you were
caught in a life-and-death situation?
For people who suffer from misophonia, it can.
Misophonia is a mysterious condition characterized by
the experience of strong negative emotions, often anger
and anxiety, in response to some everyday sounds
other people make, such as humming, chewing, typing
and even breathing.
Misophonia has been scarcely researched and
is not yet formally recognized as a psychiatric or neu-
rological condition. But some psychologists who have
seen the intense distress it causes in their patients are
convinced it should be taken seriously.
“I completely believe it exists, based on the
research and based on my interactions with patients,”
said Ali Mattu, an assistant professor in medical psy-
chology at the Columbia University Irving Medical Cen-
ter in New York City. “I’m just not quite sure what it is.”
The underlying mechanism of misophonia is
not fully known, but scientists suspect it’s caused
by the way some people’s brains process particular
sounds and react to them.
In a new study published May 17 in the journal
Scientific Reports, Denys and his colleagues monitored
the brains of 21 people with misophonia and 23 healthy
participants as they watched video clips of the following
actions: triggering sounds, like lip smacking; neutral events,
such as a person meditating; or gross scenes from movies.
Only the misophonic clips caused a different
response between the two groups. When watching a
video of lip smacking or heavy breathing, people with
misophonia felt intense anger and disgust, and their heart
rates spiked. Their brain scans showed hyperactivation
of the salience network, a group of brain areas that direct
our attention to noticeable things in our surroundings.
The study’s findings matched those from a study
last year by another team, published in the journal
Current Biology. That study found that in people with
misophonia, trigger sounds send the salience network
into an overdrive and activate brain areas responsible
for regulating fear and emotions, as well as forming
long-term memories. Using different brain-imaging
techniques, the researchers found the connections
between these brain areas are different and sometimes
structurally more robust in people with misophonia than
they are in the general public.
These findings have led scientists to suspect
misophonia is caused by a different wiring of the brain,
causing the brain to perceive particular sounds as highly
salient and respond with intense anxiety and distress. In
other words, this brain reacts to a chewing sound in a way
that’s more appropriate for responding to a lion’s roar.
To help patients with misophonia, therapists use a
variety of techniques, often based on the type of symptoms.
“What emotions are experienced and the thoughts that come
up with those are key to treating this problem,” Mattu said.
Those who experience fear and anxiety may
respond to exposure-based treatments, in which
therapists help them learn to manage their symptoms
while exposing them to trigger sounds. In contrast,
patients who experience anger learn to manage their
distress through, for example, distraction or relaxation
techniques. The most effective therapy so far appears to
be cognitive behavioral therapy, in which therapists help
people change the way they think about these situations
and learn to shift their attention, Denys said.

World Hepatitis
Day
WORLD HEPATITIS DAY is observed
every 28th of July, bringing the world to-
gether in a single theme to raise awareness
on the global burden of viral hepatitis and
to influence change.
Globally, there are 100 million people
infected with viral hepatitis and they do not
know about it. Without finding the undi-
agnosed and linking them to care, millions
will continue to suffer and lives will be lost.
Such commemoration focuses on
awareness on viral hepatitis: “It shall dis-
cuss its causes, transmission, consequences,
diagnoses, treatment and prevention of
viral hepatitis. Including the need for im-
mediate infant immunization and the im-
portance of observing the correct schedule
and dosage as well as the importance of
child and adult vaccination.”
The Department of Health (DOH) shall
lead the cities and municipalities (local
government units/LGUs) together with
non-government organizations (NGOs) to
implement a comprehensive public edu-
cation and awareness programs on viral
hepatitis; through collaborative, integrative
and multi-sectoral efforts at all levels.
Hepatitis is a general term referring to
inflammation/injury/swelling of the liver,
which result from various causes, both
infectious (like viral, bacterial, fungal, and
parasitic organisms) and non-infectious
(like alcohol, medications, autoimmune
diseases, and metabolic diseases). Viral
hepatitis accounts for more than 50% of
cases of acute (or sudden onset) hepatitis.
Viral hepatitis is most commonly
caused by hepatitis A virus (HAV), hepa-
titis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus
(HCV). These 3 viruses can all result in
sudden onset of illness (acute disease)
with symptoms of dizziness and vomiting
sensation, abdominal pain, fatigue, body
weakness and jaundice (yellowing of the
skin). Additionally, HBV and HCV can lead
to long-standing (chronic) infection. The
liver is an organ that can heal itself over-
time if the offending agent is eliminated or
withdrawn from the person’s body such as
an infectious agent or drug (such as alco-
hol). However, those who are chronically
infected (having long-standing infection)
may cause the liver to fail in its capacity to

regenerate and may develop liver scarring
(cirrhosis), which could lead to cancer –
hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
Furthermore, chronic (long standing)
hepatitis carriers remain infectious and
may transmit the disease for many years.
Hepatitis B infection is a major health
concern in the Philippines. It affects 1 of 8
Filipinos. While it may lead to liver cancer,
liver cancer is the 3rd most common cause
of cancer and is the 2nd leading cancer
killer in the Philippines. The number of
deaths from liver cancer is expected to
double in the next 15 years if no efforts are
exerted to control its proliferation in the
general population.
Other viruses that cause hepatitis in-
clude hepatitis D virus (HDV) and hepatitis
E virus (HEV), adenovirus, cytomegalo-
virus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV),
and, rarely, herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Other pathogens (eg, virus SEN-V) may
account for additional cases of non-A/
non-E hepatitis.
The term viral hepatitis can describe
either a symptomatic illness or the micro-
scopic findings on liver biopsy associated
with the disease. Acute (sudden onset)
infection with a hepatitis virus may result
in conditions ranging from subtle or mild
diseases to self-limited symptomatic dis-
ease, to obvious liver failure. Adults with
acute (sudden) hepatitis A or B are usually
symptomatic. Persons with acute hepatitis
C may be either symptomatic or asymp-
tomatic (no symptoms).
Hepatitis A infection is considered a
water (or food)-borne illness. It is transmit-
ted through contaminated food and water,
meaning it is acquired usually by fecal-oral
route. Thus, hygiene is of great importance
in the transmission of HAV.
In contrast, the Hepatitis B and C
viruses can be blood-borne (transmitted
through blood transfusion), maternal to
fetal or sexual transmission (usually HBV).
This is why, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C
screening are part of the 5 tests done in
blood banks to those donated blood prior to

One view on the
millennials
THIS IS JUST one view among many
others with regard to the so-called
‘millennials,’ those young people born
between 1980 and 2000. I have heard
quite a bit of comments about them, and
many of them are not good. I thought of
putting my two cents if only to give a
more balanced view on them.
Some people say that the millennials
are very different from those of the previous
generation, as in, they are disturbingly if not
offensively different. They are not just differ-
ent in a legitimate way, but rather that they
have already crossed the line of legitimacy.
In one talk show, for example, they
were characterized as “coddled, entitled,
narcissistic and lazy.” I thought that was a
rather sweeping and reckless characteriza-
tion of these young people who are grap-
pling with a significantly different world
environment, what with all the techno-
logical progress and the many ideological,
cultural and lifestyle choices, etc., they are
exposed to.
I find it unfair to see and judge people
more by their peripheral aspects rather than
by the more essential one that should have a
universal applicability irrespective of what
generation one belongs, or of race, religion,
gender, etc. We have to be clear about what
things we should hold as having an abso-
lute value and what also are those that only
have a relative value.
Yes, there will always be differences
among the different generations, some of
them we may consider as legitimate while
others we may already deem as illegiti-
mate. This phenomenon should not come
as a surprise. Given our human condition,
we will always have these kinds of differ-
ences. But that should be a challenge we
have to tackle, making clarifications in an
atmosphere of respect, patience and charity.
Truth is what the past generations
worked so hard to discover and accomplish
are now usually already taken for granted
by the current generation as it will try to
discover and accomplish other new things
or at least introduce certain innovations.
This fact will bring about certain differences
in attitudes and outlook. So it is unfair to
compare people from different generations
using the yardstick of a particular genera-
tion.
Of course, not to be forgotten is the re-
ality that regardless of whatever generation
one belongs, there will always be cases of
persons who manage to do good and take
advantage of what their generation in gen-
eral has accomplished, as well as cases of
persons who misuse and get spoiled
by what their generation has developed.
We just have to learn to live with that
reality, and focus more on what can unite
the different generations rather than on
what divides. We need to know where to
find the source and energy of unity among
the different generations. And this can only

The movie, “The Longest
Day” was the D-Day
FOR THOSE OF YOU who have seen the
movie “The Longest Day” may have wit-
nessed how awesome it must have been
during the preparation of the conflict. It
was done with 4,000 ships, 13,999 planes,
a hundred thousand of paratroopers, an
assemblage of various types of vehicles,
including weapons carriers, pick-ups,
bazookas, heavy weapons and gears, as
well as canned foods and several rations.
It was huge. And it was the US that
supplied most if not all of the above. After
all, it was for the supply of the world be-
cause it would have made all of us slaves
of the empire envisaged by Hitler and
company. The Axis powers of Germany,
Italy and Japan would have been our mas-
ters. Wow!!
The Germans knew that there was
going to be an offensive but they did not
know the date. It was also an inclement
weather for the month of June as the season
prevailed. Gen. Dwight Eisenhower was
the leader who was to call in the orders. He
was waiting for a few days of lay-up on the
weather. The Allies were keen on going to
the offensive.
It finally fell on the 6th day of June and
the attack begun. There was a darkening of
the clouds because of the immense number
of planes and another darkening of the
seas due to the number of ships that went
into the fray. When the Germans saw what
they saw in their binoculars, they must
have been aghast. When the bombardment
started, there was a confusion because

operators in Pangasinan, the country’s top
producer of Bangus (Milkfish).
The fish pens in Pangasinan’s aqua-
culture areas had been largely blamed
for the massive fish kills that hit several
coastal areas of the province.
Last year, on the month of May, dead
fish (Bangus) worth Php 86 million were
found floating along the main fish pens
areas in Pangasinan, which is the Kakipu-
tan Channel.
The shift from fish pens to the use of
fish cages was recommended by the Bu-
reau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources
(BFAR) to solve the problem of the dete-
riorating water quality in the aquaculture
zone, which was pointed out as the main
cause of the fish kill.
Fish pens’ farm pollution largely
impeded the flow of water from and to
the sea. The channel to the sea needs
immediate rehabilitation. Fish pen opera-
tors had been notified to dismantle their

nation. No wonder that the world look to
America with all hosannas.

Time of death?
I HAVE HEARD this question in almost
all crime movies after someone finds the
body. The detective turns to the medical
examiner and asks that question. But in
real life, medical examiners do not have
a very exact method for figuring out how
long ago someone died.
Researchers now say that they could
use the bacteria found on the body to
provide a more accurate way to determine
the time of death. In the study, researchers
analysed the bacteria of 21 cadavers. The
necrobiome, or the community of bacteria
found on a dead body, changes significantly
as time passes after death and the body
decomposes, according to the study.
Medical examiners usually estimate the
time of death by physically inspecting the
body for signs of early-phase decomposi-
tion and, in later stages of decomposition,
by looking at the insects present on the
body. But these techniques are unreliable
due to factors such as temperature, weather
conditions and geographic location.
But by knowing which microbes take
over a dead body and how long it takes,
forensic scientists might be able to use the
necrobiome to determine time of death or
other aspects of a crime scene.
In the study, the researchers took
samples of bacteria from the ear and nasal
canals of the cadavers. The cadavers were
placed outdoors and were left to decom-
pose naturally over the course of several
weeks.

The Basic Safety Training for MHOF is aimed
at improving the basic safety skills of local motorboat
operators and fisherfolks and expose them to new
techniques in Personal Survival, Fire Prevention
and Firefighting, Elementary First Aid and Personal
Safety and Social Responsibility. Other salient top-
ics are Rules of the Road, Typhoon Awareness and
Marine Safety Requirements.
The participants were thankful for the trainings
conducted, which equipped them with additional
knowledge and confidence on how to respond prop-
erly in the event of an emergency and the skills on
how to use lifesaving, safety, and communication
equipment and other survival paraphernalia.
This was the first batch of graduates produced
by NMP on MHOF this year. NMP also inked similar
MOAs with other LGUs such as the municipalities of
Tolosa, Leyte and Limasawa, Southern, Leyte. The
training is set to be conducted on 23 -24 July 2019
and 07-09 August 2019, respectively.
Likewise, coordination with other LGUs in
the region is currently being made for possible
collaboration, thereby, expanding the reach of
beneficiaries for this program.

degree-days”. Accumulated degree-days
are a way to measure the passage of time
and temperature simultaneously.
The bacterial communities found on a
dead body change over time. Think about
a decomposing vertebrate as an ecosystem.
The ecosystem is very dynamic because the
environment of the decomposing host is in
a state of rapid changes.
For example, cycles of high and low
oxygen levels play a role in which bacteria
are present, as oxygen is consumed and
carbon dioxide builds up in the body. The
body’s tissues eventually rupture and
oxygen flows back in, changing the en-
vironment again. There are also cycles of
high and low nutrient richness; nutrient
levels may be low until a tissue ruptures
and nutrients spill out.
Ultimately, the environment is a feed-
ing feast for alternating groups of organ-
isms, setting up a succession of bacteria that
proliferate when their time comes.
Researchers still have much to learn
about this ecosystem. The new study is a
very promising proof of concept. But the
method could be improved by adding more
data from studies at multiple locations, and
involving bacteria from additional parts of
the body.

ORMOC CITY – “There
are sufferings in life that is
beyond our control,” Rev-
erend Father Arthur T. Du-
arte, one of the 14 survivors
during the boat-capsizing
off Limasawa Island, told
the scholars of the Ormoc
Local Government Unit
(LGU) during their gen-
eral assembly at the Ormoc
City Superdome.
The crowd hushed as
he revealed himself to be
one of the survivors of the
said tragedy, which hap-
pened between Padre Bur-
gos and Limasawa waters,
during the onset of Tropical
Depression Falcon mid-July.
He then expressed his
gratitude towards the sup-
portive parents of the schol-
ars for guiding their chil-
dren to attain a good future.
According to Father Duarte,
parents play a big role in
guiding and encouraging
their children to strive and
be independent in every
aspect of life.
There will be many
achievements that you
could obtain in this life, he
added, saying: “If you reach
your goal and aspirations,
be humble. Our achieve-
ments is not the bases of our
humanity. There are only
specific areas that we are
better but we don’t know
most of the fields in other
academic endeavors.”
That his humble state-

OCMS is a society com-
posed of doctors and physi-
cians: people with the “most
dignified” profession, as
they are the true lifesavers,
hence, have contributed sig-
nificantly to the community
through their service under
the banner of the Philippine
Medical Association (PMA).
VM Locsin, in his words
of inspiration, expressed his
deep appreciation to all the
doctors, saying: “Medicine
is not for the faint of heart. It
requires intelligence and grit
just to finish years of medi-
cal school. But all that you
go through and all that you
do, tell stories of passion and
dedication to save lives.”
He then thanked the doc-
tors of OCMS for always
responding to the needs of the
community and for reaching
out to those in need especially
in times of calamity and emer-
gency. “What Ormoc is now, is
partly because of what OCMS
has given and done. We are

for all that you have shared
and we’ll look forward to
working with the members
of the OCMS as LGU-Ormoc’s
very valuable partner in ser-
vice,” added VM Locsin.
He then assured the new
set of officers that the city

Christian Businessmen and
Professionals) and being the
head of his small family.
After a year of leading
the OCMS, he has but one
realization, and said, “Even

and ambitious in life we may
be, we stand united under
one society. We live under
the Hippocratic oath of love,
service, and humanity above
one’s self. And I just hope and
pray that we will continue
the pledge we make till the
end.” He thanked all the
members of the OCMS for
being with him throughout
his leadership journey.
He then gave plaques
of appreciation to selected
members/officers of OCMS
who had exerted extra effort
in uplifting the society. He
also gave a special award to
Dr. Rhodette Arevalo, a car-
diologist in Ormoc, who, per
Dr. Cam, has given the society
prestige and honor, by being
nominated and chosen as one
of the 10 most outstanding
physicians in the Philippines.
He also thanked the City
Health Department of Ormoc
for being its local and loyal
partner in every activity that
the OCMS has done.
Before ending his speech,
Dr. Cam addressed Dr. Niño
Jessielito N. Doydora, the new
president of OCMS, saying: “I
have full expectations on you.
You are now the captain. Steer
the ship well, my friend. Bring
the society to a new and more
glorious heights.”

trained the 22 rescued Min-
doro fisherfolks with Basic
Safety Training for Motor-
boat Handlers / Operators
& Fisherfolks with Typhoon
Preparedness (BSTMHOF)
last 17-18 July 2019 at the
Sikatuna Beach Hotel and
Restaurant, San Jose, Oc-
cidental Mindoro.
The training was conducted
in response to the request of
DOLE MIMAROPA Region as
part of their package assistance
to the 22 rescued fisherfolks who
were abandoned after their boat
was reportedly hit by a Chinese
vessel off Recto Bank.
The training was made
possible in collaboration with the
Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)
Coast Guard Station-Occidental
Mindoro, and the Maritime In-
dustry Authority (MARINA), Local
Government Unit (LGU) of Oc-
cidental Mindoro and the DOLE
Regional Office IV-B.

CEBU CITY – The Department
of Social Welfare and Devel-
opment Pantawid Pamilyang
Pilipino Program (DSWD-4Ps),
in partnership with the Philip-
pine Press Institute, and with
the support of the Department of
Foreign Affairs and Trade-Aus-
tralian Embassy, held a series of
three-day seminar-workshops on
poverty reporting, an inter-island
media learning exchange project.
The first leg of the seminar-
workshop took place on July 17-
19 at The A Avenue in Makati for
the Luzon leg. The second was
held on July 23-25 at Azia Suites
and Residences in Cebu for the
Visayas leg. The last leg will be on
July 29-31 at Casa Leticia in Davao
for the Mindanao leg.
The seminar-workshop gener-
ally aims to build and strengthen
partnership among the members
of the mainstream media and the
information officers of the DSWD.
The seminar-workshop specifi-
cally aims to: provide the media
practitioners a venue to exchange
ideas on how poverty is reported
in the Philippines; mobilize media
practitioners to come up with a
positive, fair, and factual stories
about the 4Ps through a field visit;
and with the published stories
of the participants, the seminar-
workshop hopes to widen the
media reach of the 4Ps program.
For the Cebu leg, there were a
total of 18 participants composed
of nine journalists and nine IOs
(Information Officers).
Victor Redmond ‘Red’ Ba-
tario, the seminar director, said
that the seminar-workshop is vital
for both journalists and IOs in
spreading factual and fair stories
about poverty in the Philipines.
“Kadalasan, ang challenge for
journalists is having the correct
and accurate information. Hindi
naman sila makaka pagdiscuss
about poverty nang mas malalim
kung walang ganung under-
standing about poverty. And sa
IOs nakasalalay o kumukuha ng
accurate information ang ating
journalist. So there really is a need
for a solid coordination and inter-
action between the journalists and
the IOs,” shared Red Batario.
The participants were then
given lectures on understanding
poverty in the Philippine context
by no less than Undersecretary
Paterna M. Ruiz of the National
Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC).
Marie Grace O. Ponce (Public Rela-
tions Officer, 4Ps) also gave a de-
tailed discussion on the program as
the national government’s flagship
poverty reduction program.
On the second day (July 24, 2019),
the participants for the Visayas leg
went out of the venue for a field visit
to Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu. All the par-
ticipants, along with the PPI, made a
courtesy call to the city officials. There
at the city hall, 12 selected parent
leaders of 4Ps were also introduced,
as the interviewees. There, the media
and IOs were given the chance to
gather detailed information from
their interviewees.
After that, the IOs and media
practitioners that were grouped into
four were given ample time to write
a positive story based on the informa-
tion gathered during the field visit.
Each group had its own style of
angling the stories. Some made a per-
sonality sketch of their interviewee,
which drew emotions from all other
participants. Other groups wrote
a more detailed info about the 4Ps
program itself and how it changed
the lives of their interviewees.
All in all, according to the PPI,
all four outputs were already pub-
lishable. There were just minimal
comments and corrections.
The PPI and DSWD are hop-
ing to be able to publish 10 or more
positive stories once all the three legs
are done. Only then can PPI give a
“Go” signal to its participants to also
publish the stories in their respective
