ENERGY WAVE

WHAT IS IT?
The Wave Energy is also called “seawater energy” or “Tidal Energy”. This type of energy is
obtained by taking advantage of the tides or waves using a tidal plant as a system for
generating electricity, transforming tidal energy into renewable energy.
It is a type of renewable energy, because it's clean, pollutants gaseous, liquid or solid aren't
produced in this process.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The operation of a tidal plant is simple, when the tide rises the floodgates of a dike opens
and the water enters to the reservoir. Then when it has maximum level of water in the
reservoir, the floodgates closes. Later, when the tide drops below the level of the reservoir,
the floodgates open letting the water pass through narrow ducts to turbines that will turn and
generate energy.
Finally, electricity is transported by cables on artificial islands, where there are more
turbines.
WHERE CAN WE FIND IT?
Some places in the world have implemented this system, such as:
France, Canada, United Kingdom, England, Spain, among others.
In Colombia this system hasn’t implemented still, but some universities like Universidad
Nacional de Colombia have been studying several places to implemented it; some places
that they have studied are: Barranqulla, Santa Marta, Cartagena, Tumaco and Caribe.
CONCLUSION
Wave Energy is a great alternative and a good source of renewable energy, but its costs are
the problem because it is very expensive. The relationship between the amount of energy
that can be obtained and the economic costs of production has prevented this type of energy
from being developed or implemented in most of the world.
