I. Using the material “ Speech Improvement “ by Morton Gordon, answer the following:
1.- List the 5 different categories of courses available in speech courses and explain their differences
among them. (10 courses)
Public Speaking, Argumentation, Debate, Group discussion, Semantics, Storytelling
3.- Gordon explains that the book was written for two kinds of students, explain.
Natives: Know the language since their were young.
Non-natives: Doesn't know the language and have a different L1 than english
4.- What are the main speech problems that each group face?
Natives: Pronunciation, Intonation Rhythm, bad learning habits
Non-natives: L1 interference & lack of L2 sound in their L1.
5.- Why do people need to speak acceptably? What unacceptable speech attracts?
People judge us by the way we speak, Loss of effective communication.
8.- What are the most common problems a nonnative speaker of English will encounter?
English sound may not appear in your MT, p11The pronunciation, misspelling, lack of motivation,
practice time.
10.- What is the most important thing you have to do in order to succeed?
Willingness to use the target language
12.- Explain the improvement process of the practice stage and the individual needs:
Ear training, Conversation practice with a partner.
13.- Explain the phrase: “ Accurate listening skills lead to accurate pronunciation skills”
In order to pronounce correctly we need to train our ears to listen carefully the sounds of the target
language .
II.- Record yourself using the 44 sentences in the material. Pages 434 and 435. Speech
improvement activity. Deliver it to the teacher on October 16th.
