I. Using the material “ Speech Improvement “ by Morton Gordon, answer the following:

1.- List the 5 different categories of courses available in speech courses and explain their differences
among them. (10 courses)
Public Speaking, Argumentation, Debate, Group discussion, Semantics, Storytelling

2. Explain the 6 fundamentals of oral delivery.


Pronunciation of American Sounds, Stress & Rhythm, Melody & Intonation, Volume, Clarity.

3.- Gordon explains that the book was written for two kinds of students, explain.
Natives: Know the language since their were young.
Non-natives: Doesn't know the language and have a different L1 than english

4.- What are the main speech problems that each group face?
Natives: Pronunciation, Intonation Rhythm, bad learning habits
Non-natives: L1 interference & lack of L2 sound in their L1.

5.- Why do people need to speak acceptably? What unacceptable speech attracts?
People judge us by the way we speak, Loss of effective communication.

6.- Define skill and habit


Skill: What are you able to do, and can improve with practice.
Habit: Things you do in a repetitive manner over a longer period of time that becomes automatic

7.- According to Gordon, what are the main difficulties of improvement?


Time destined to practice ; Intonation and motivation.

8.- What are the most common problems a nonnative speaker of English will encounter?
English sound may not appear in your MT, p11The pronunciation, misspelling, lack of motivation,
practice time.

9.- In early practice what can be necessary to do when training yourself?


Listen to audios in the target language, awareness of flaws, evaluate yourself.

10.- What is the most important thing you have to do in order to succeed?
Willingness to use the target language

11. Explain the differences: target, discrimination and replacement.


Target: Curse word wrongly pronounced
Discrimination: Difference between two auditory images
Replacement:Course, correct pronounced word

12.- Explain the improvement process of the practice stage and the individual needs:
Ear training, Conversation practice with a partner.
13.- Explain the phrase: “ Accurate listening skills lead to accurate pronunciation skills”
In order to pronounce correctly we need to train our ears to listen carefully the sounds of the target
language .

II.- Record yourself using the 44 sentences in the material. Pages 434 and 435. Speech
improvement activity. Deliver it to the teacher on October 16th.
