MATH 440/540 HW 1

Due Friday August 30

When turning in homework:

1. Summarize each problem statement (you can either write in your own words or write
out the problems as you see written here or as they are written in the text). It should
be clear what the goal of the problem is from your statement. At the end of the
semester you should be able to look at your homework problems and understand what
the goal of the problem is

2. Write your solution with sufficient explanation so that a classmate who does not under-
stand how to do the problem can follow your work. You do not have to explain how you
integrate or differentiate simple expressions, but you should explain why you are doing
what you are doing. It is expected that if you picked up your homework 6 months from
now you could understand what you are doing without referring to external resources.

3. As always, follow the academic honor code. Remember that plagiarism is representing
someone else’s ideas as your own. That someone else could be a classmate, your
instructor, another textbook, the internet, etc. If you use the internet to get an idea
for how to do a problem, be sure to cite the webpage. If you see a classmates solution
and you use that student’s ideas, give credit to the student. I do not take off points
if you cite your sources. But if you plagiarize and are caught the consequences can be
serious, either from a warning (first time only), to expulsion.

2. Z & T Chapter 1, problem 1.4

3. Domain Problems Below are given regions in IR2 . For each region (i) graph the
region, (ii) Determine whether it is a domain (must be open and connected); if the
region is not a domain, explain why it is not.

(a) {(x, y) | xy − 1 6= 0}
(b) {(x, y) | y = x2 }
(c) {(x, y) | x > 0, y > 0}
(d) {(x, y) | xy > 0}

4. Z & T Chapter 1 problem 2.1. For part (b), sketch by hand, providing a couple of
sentences explaining how you obtained your sketch. You may check your result using
technology.

5. Z & T Chapter 1 problem 2.4. (Use the properties of gradient to find the tangent line,
dy
and then to see that you get the same answer, use implicit differentiation to find dx
and use the methods of Calculus 1 to find the tangent line).

6. Z & T Chapter 1 problem 2.5

7. Z & T Chapter 1 problem 3.1. Reason this result geometrically only.

8. Z & T Chapter 1 problem 3.2.
