Introduction

In a world where climate change, air and water pollution, biodiversity loss, water scarcity, ozone
depletion, and other environmental problems overlaps, Log 9 Materials, a Bengaluru-based nanotech
start-up provides solution to the world with its ‘Wonder Material’ known as Graphene. Graphene has
been touted as the ‘Wonder Material’ since more than a decade and a half, after Nobel award-winning
scientists Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov pulled it from a block of Graphite using just a regular
adhesive tape. You and I have also been producing Graphene unknowingly by the simple act of writing
with pencils. Most pencils are made of Graphite and if you manage to draw a thin-enough line on a piece
of paper, you have successfully produced Graphene.

The Indian startup involved in the race for Graphene-based products was founded by Akshay Singhal and
Kartik Hajela while researching air filtration at IIT-Roorkee, where they accidentally discovered the
application of Graphene in cigarette filtration and decided to start the commercial production
of high-quality graphene nanomaterials in India due to their scarce availability at the time.
Graphene Revolution Underway?
Graphene has been proved, since its inception to be much more superior than other materials.
But, then the cost is also equivalently high. Well, the properties that Graphene posses can be
leveraged, but, there was a need to develop processes to manufacture this sort of graphene to
make it commercially viable for the market. That is all Log9 is based upon, it develops processes
to manufacture a certain type of graphene material for a particular application in an
economical way so that it can actually see the light of market. As the other materials have
already reached their peak of efficiency and innovation, and there is a lot of revolution
happening in the hardware and software. There is a need of new materials to support these
advancements happening all across other spectrums. There is already lot of research happening
in graphene and Log9 is commercializing it through different products. This way it will be true
to say that Graphene revolution is underway.
