Punches – This comprises upper and lower punch and they compress the powder
into tablets of various shapes within the die.
Cam truck – This guides the position/movement of the punches.
Tablet adjuster – This is used to adjust the volume of the powder to be
compressed and so determines the weight of the tablet.
Ejection adjuster – This facilities the ejection of the tablet from the die cavity
after compression.
In the production of tablets using single punch, the upper punch compresses the powder into
tablets while the lower punch ejects the tablet.

Tablets compacted on any tablet press from a single granulation may vary in weight and/or
thickness. A variation in either will result in a change of density, which affects tablet hardness.
By determining the actual tablet hardness required, machine pressures can be reduced, resulting
in less punch and die wear, and lower tooling costs
With this convenient easy-to-use instrument the Stokes Tablet Hardness Tester Model 539, tablet
makers no longer need to rely on finger sensitivity or other “guesswork” methods, they can
measure tablet hardness directly in terms of kilograms of pressure require to crush the tablet.
This reading is then correlated with the following:
Method of manufacture
Desired physical characteristics of the tablet
Composition
Requiring only a modest investment, the standard unit is designed to test tablets ranging in size
from the smallest tablet size to ¾” diameter with a maximum thickness of 1/3”. The simplified
design of the Stokes Tablet Hardness Tester Model 539 provides for quick and accurate reading,
and can be equipped with special parts to permit the testing of larger diameter tablets at higher
pressures.
Optional Accessories:
The Stokes Tablet Hardness Tester can be equipped with special parts to permit the testing of
larger diameter tablets, at higher pressures. These parts consist of the following:
Modified Head (or anvil): Will accommodate a full 7/8 inch diameter spherical tablet, or
up to 1 3/16 inch diameter flat-face or convex tablet.
Modified Duty Spring: Is capable of exerting a pressure of 60 kilograms—three times
greater than the standard spring, which is rated at 20 kilograms.
