CASE 01: GOING TO COLLEGE PERFORMANCE TASK NO. 1
Jun and Juanita own a four-bedroom home in an executive village in Tumaga, Zamboanga City. Jun is an
administrative officer in the Department of Social Welfare and Development. Juanita now stays home with
their child, Joseph, who is age 5. Until recently, the family has felt very comfortable with their financial
position. After visiting a family financial planner, the couple became concerned that they were spending
too much and not putting enough funds aside for both their child's future education needs and their own
retirement. Jun earns Php 40,000 per month, but with the rising costs of education, their past contribution
efforts have left them short of their financial goals.
To estimate the amount of money, the family needs to begin putting away for future security some
general information was obtained by their financial planner. The couple felt that the amount of money they
currently contribute to their GSIS would be sufficient for their retirement needs. What they had not
accounted for was Joseph's education.
Jun is an alumnus of Pilar College of Zamboanga City, Inc., a private sectarian school owned and
administered by the Religious of the Virgin Mary with an above average tuition of approximately Php
20,000 per year. Juanita graduated from Zamboanga City State Polytechnic College. The tuition expense
there is only Php 2,500 per year. When Joseph turns 18, the couple wishes to send him to either of these
colleges. They have a slight preference for the local private college. The problem, however, is that with
the rate at which tuition is increasing, the family is not sure they can raise enough money.
To assist in the calculations, assume the tuition at both colleges will increase at an annual rate of 5%.
Further, assume the family can deposit their money into an education insurance plan at Sun Life
Financial, which has historically earned a 12% return per annum.
The couple wishes to have a pre-determined yearly amount automatically drafted from their checking
account. When Joseph starts college, they will slowly liquidate the account by making an annual payment
to Joseph to cover tuition at the beginning of each year for the four years he will be in college.
