DSTWU Column Models
Reflux ratio 45 with 1 bar throughout

Component Recovery Spec.

Acetone >>96.5% in the distillate
Isobyturaldehyde 96.5% in the distillate
Ethyl acetate 96.5% in the bottom
N-Heptane >>96.5% in the bottom

What is the minimum number of stages required to achieve the desired separation (at infinite
reflux)?
What is the actual number of stages required to achieve the desired separation using a reflux
ratio of 45?
DSTWU Column Models
Plot reflux ratio vs number of theoretical stages
Lowest number: minimum stage
Highest number: 50
Increment size: 1
What is fewest number of stages in which the reflux ratio is below 2?
What is the optimal feed location?
What is the expected mole fraction of isobutyraldehyde in the distillate using these conditions
as predicted by DSTWU?
Study Case #2
3.5 kg/s equimolar mixture of n-heptane and toluene (Boiling point feed with the pressure of
110 kPa) is separated by extractive distillation using n-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) as the selective
solvent.
Theoretical stage: 10. Feed stage: 8 from top starting by a condenser. Reflux ratio: 3
The selective solvent removes toluene, and they are obtained in the bottom product (distillate
flow rate equals to the mole flow of n-heptane in the feed).
Toluene is separated from NMP in a second atmospheric distillation column with Theoretical
stage 6. Feed stage in the middle. Reflux ratio 2.5 (and the distillate rate equals to the mole flow
rate of toluene in the feed)
Study Case #2
Calculate the composition of products from both column if 630 kmol/h NMP (100oC, 110 kPa)
enters to the optimum stage.
Find the dependence of products (n-heptane and toluene) purity and specific requirement of
NMP (kmol of NMP per kmol of feed).
