Q- 1 A feed mixture at 82 °C and 1035 kN/m2 pressure is to be fractionated. Feed contains

Component Mol% α
Methane 3 56.4
Ethane 7 1
n-Propane 15 6.45
n-Butane 33 2.47
n-Pentane 30 1.0
n-Hexane 12 0.465

Fractionation is to be done so that the vapour distillate contains 98% of n-Propane but only 1%
of n-Pentane. Calculate the no. of theoretical plates required at total reflux and corresponding
products.

Q- 2 A feed mixture containing 45 mole% ethanol (A), 25 mole% iso-propanol (B) and 30
mole% water (C) is to be separated at a rate of 100 kmol/h by distillation, so that 97.5% ethanol
and not more than 2.5% of water should go to the distillate. The minimum number of trays
required for the given separation is 9.2. Total distillate flow rate is 61.63 kmol/h and the
minimum reflux ratio for the desired separation is 1.43. If column is operating at a reflux ratio
1.3 times the minimum.
(a) Number of ideal trays required in operating condition by using Gilliland correlation.
(b) Number of trays in rectifying & stripping sections separately.

Q- 3 A ternary mixture containing 45 mole % benzene (A), 25 mole % toluene (B) and 30 mole %
cumene (C) is to be separated by distillation, so that 97.5 % benzene and not more than 2.5% of toluene
should go to the distillate. The minimum reflux ratio for the desired separation is 1.43. If column is
operating at a reflux ratio 1.3 times the minimum. α12= 2.4, α32= 0.48.
(a) Calculate the required number of ideal trays in total reflux condition.
(b) Number of ideal trays required in operating condition by using Gilliland correlation.
(c) Number of trays in rectifying & stripping sections separately.

Q- 4 A multicomponent mixture have benzene (z1= 0.06, α1= 1.25), toluene (z1= 0.40, α1=
1.15), ethylbenzene (z3= 0.30, α3= 1.0), cumene (z4= 0.24, α4= 0.68). The feed rate is 80 kmol/h
(liquid at its bubble point). It is required that 99% of toluene should be recovered in the distillate
and 96% of the ethylbenzene should go to the bottom product. If minimum reflux ratio (R min)
is to be considered 1.43, determine the following:
(a) Minimum number of ideal stages required for this separation.
(b) Number of ideal stages required if the operating reflux ratio is three times of minimum.
