Effectiveness of Strategic Intervention Material: Diverging Evolution for Grade 10

Biology of La Filipina National High School

Context and Rationale

Teaching biological evolution remained as challenge to educators across ages to narrate

the development of life from simple and single entity to a complex and diversified biome. As
cited by Neubrand and Harms (2016), evolutionary biolgy unifies all topics in biology and
explains the diversity as well as the unity of life. It discusses the complexity of environmental
adaptation and it’s link to molecular differenttion. Because of its intricacy in nature, emphasis
on well developed teaching and learning proceses in biology is a must.

Generally, science education always strive to be better in every educational assessment.

As reported by Amir (2016), students have negative attitude towards science which became a
critical point in achieving the Uganda’s vision for coming years. He also reported the alarming
rate of decline students performance in science for just three consecutive years. He mentioned
the drastic down trend of comparative performance from 39.1% in the first year to 36.0% in
the secocond year and eventually reaches the lowest point of 24.3% in the third year of
assessment in Biology alone.

In Phillipines, the Department of Education participated some international assessment

surveys to continually monitors the country’s educational development. The International
Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and Programme for International Student
Assessment (PISA) reported in the prevoius year the low profeciency of the country in the field
of science. Dacumos (2017) mentions in his study that Philppines is one of the bottom five
coutries with poor performance in science.
Even in the school level, La Filipina National High School drastically declined in the
National Achivement Test (NAT) result in science on S.Y. 2013 - 2014 and S.Y. 2014 - 2015.
From Mean Percentage Score (MPS) of 63.93 in S.Y. 2013 -2014, it becomes 29.28 in the S.Y.
2014 - 2015. Despite the various factors presented by the teachers and administrators, it is very
alarming to be acquainted in the trend of NAT results in the past few years. Thus, there is a
need that teachers must be creative and innovative in the delivery of lessons and even in the
intervention material.

According to Rabino (2014), main factors that account the low performance of the
students in science includes inappropriate teaching learning processes, inadequate instructional
materials and insuffecient learning rescources. Among the aforementioned factors affecting
students’ performance in Science, teaching-learning process had been greatly emphasized. In
order to uplift the performance in science, students must value the importance and appliation
of its concept. Teachers must provide meaningful materials and tasks that would serve as good
motivators.

One of the meaningful material a teacher can provide is the Strategic Intervention
Material (SIM). Through well planned guidees, activities, enrichments and assessments,
students will practive the essential skills to master the least learned competencies. This kind of
remdiation will help the students to create their own understanding of concept and allow
themselves to transfer the learnings into a tangible application of concepts.

Action Research Questions

This study aimed to identify the effectiveness of strategic intervention material as
remediation of Grade 10 low performing students on the least learned competencies in Biology
in La Filipina National High School. This further sought to answer the following questions.
1. What is the level of performance of the students in the pre-test?
2. What is the level of performance of the students in the post-test?
3. Is there a significant difference in pre-test and post-test scores of the students?
Proposed Innovation, Intervention and Strategy

The following is the innovative intervention to be used in the study.

Strategic Intervention Material (SIM)

According to Dy (2014), SIM refers to teaching aid introduced into the teaching
methods to stimulate students' interest in the activity to increase their level of
understanding. It is a learning package composed of guide card, several hands-on and
minds-on activities, assessments, enrichment, and answer keys which the students can
bring home as supplementary learning material that will help them work and learn
independently or with their peers. SIM is anchored to the least learned competencies of
the students in a particular quarter or school year.

Action Research Methods

a. Participants
The respondents of the study includes the low performing students (with grades
below passing rate) of four sections handled by the teacher / researcher.

b. Data Gathering Methods

The study will use a 60 item multiple choice test as pre-test and post-test to measure
the level of proficiency of the students before and after intervention. It will also
gauge the differences of the performances to quantify the effectiveness of the
intervention.

c. Data Analysis Plan

In the analysis of data, the main statistical tool to be use are:

Mean Score. This is used to determine the level of proficiency of the students
before and after the remediation. It quantify the academic performance of the
students in specified period.

p-Test. This is used to compare the scores of the students in the pre-test and post-
test. It differentiate the scores of the students to show the significance of each
scores.
