CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

A positive school environment is defined as a school having appropriate

facilities, well-managed classrooms, available school-based health supports, and
a clear, fair disciplinary policy. It sets the stage for the external factors that affect
students, Thomas Jefferson (2008). The term "school activities" applies to a wide
range of skill-based games, strategies and interactive activities that support
students' educational development. The goal of all activities is to enhance
students' understanding, skill or effectiveness in a specific area by engaging
multiple styles of learning.

According to Chukwuemeka (2013), the environment is one of the

important aspects required to produce this type of competent individual. The
school environment can also be defined as set of internal features where it
differentiate one school from another school and with that, it influence the
behavior of the staff and students. Environments play major roles in the life of
every individual whether a student, teacher, employer or employee. The
challenge of education today is to offer experiences that provide students with
opportunities to develop the understanding, skills, and attitudes necessary to
become lifelong learners, capable of identifying and solving problems and
dealing with change.

Student activities are an integral part of the school program. Qualified

students must be able to participate in any activity without regard to race,
religion, national origin, disability, or sex. Generally approved by the principal and
under the direct supervision of the staff, activities should contribute to the
educational objectives of the school and should avoid interrupting the
instructional program. One purpose of student activities is to provide
opportunities for students to be involved in the life of the school. Students
experience leadership opportunities that help them grow into well-rounded adults.
Activities expand interactions among students, who are likely to interact with
others who are different from them. Thus, opportunities to experience diversity
are enhanced, claimed by Beta Lamda (2002).

John Paul Gorgonio (2017), state that school climate reflects the quality of
life in an educational institution experienced not only by the students but also
parents, teachers and school administrators. It is a construct which pertains to a
multifaceted aspect of a learners and other stakeholder’s educational experience.
According to Freiburg, school climate is a vital but seemingly indefinable quality
that one “feels” in being around for the first time in a school campus.
Academic success is highly related with school climate. In the effective school
climate, stakeholders of school collaborate and work together to realize its
vision and mission in producing quality graduates with 21st century skills.

Objective

The researcher wants to know the effects of school environment to the

students’ involvement in school activities.
Significance of the Study

Based on the presumption and statements above, the author was

necessitated to conduct this study to find out whether the school environment

affects the school activities of the students. The result of this research

undertaking will benefit the following:

Students. This would help students to be more participative in any school

activities and to have an idea of choosing a positive school environment.

School Administrators. This would serve as a guide to have an idea or

improving the quality of school facilities such as Acoustics and Noise, Air Quality,

lighting, classroom/ school size and space, and many other things which has a

great impact in every student.

Teachers. This would present them some strategies on how to cater

learners and it helps them to find a solutions to a particular issue.

Parents. This would serve as an encouragement to collaborate with

teachers in schools in any events or activities that would be done by the school.

And also, it guides them to choose a positive learning environment where they

are comfortable and satisfied with.

Future Researches. This study will serve as reference and it

encourages them to research, investigate how and why it happened, and make
their own decisions about complex issues.
Conceptual Framework

of Davao Wisdom Academy?

2. What is the level of Grade 11 students in the involvement of school
