SAVE THE BILBIES

BUILD A REHABILITATION CENTRE


INTRODUCTION:
Here in Australia, Bilbies lives are at risk, they are soon going to be put on the
endangered species list. The causes for Bilbies becoming extinct is because of
predators like foxes and cats like to catch them for food. Bilbies are also
competing against these animals and other animals for food, water and their
habitat. The Bilbies need your help to keep them from going extinct! Can you
help them?

In groups of 2-4 you need to design and

PROJECT MANAGEMENT:
Introduce the design brief
Clearly explain what the task is
Research what a rehabilitation centre consists of and what elements do
Bilbies specifically need in a rehabilitation centre to suit their needs.
What materials students will need to complete this task
Draw and annotate at least two different rehabilitation centers to show your
teacher for approval before starting on the project
Bring in materials to class and create your design within two lessons
In groups, evaluate your design on whether it caters to the needs of a Bilby

EVALUATION:
Does it reflect the natural habitat of the Bilby?

The climate zone eg desert, arid.

Are there small bush areas, grass clumps, dried trees/bark/twigs
scattered?
Environment
Is the environment dry?
Not many living things around?
Is the ground sandy?
Is there a place for the Bilbies to dig a burrow?

Water station: Shallows ponds, or small buckets of water?
Feeding station
Will there be insects available, eg introduced ant nets into the centre, or
will the carers feed the Bilbies

Students will also evaluate each other's project and write down feedback for
the other group to reflect upon.
PRESENTATION:
Students will present their design to the class during lesson 7, describing the
elements they have included in their design. After the presentations, the
students will put their project in different parts of the class to have it
evaluated by their peers anonymously by writing on a blank piece of paper
what they thought about each design and then place the paper into the box
next to the project. After this is done, the students will get their box which is
next to their project to read and reflect the feedback from their peers. The
students will also, in their groups, have a discussion about any
improvements they think they could have made.

Students will be given two lessons to complete the design brief project.
