Abstract

A crude 80% hydromethanolic extract of Terminalia bellerica, Glycyrrhiza glabra and Rosa
bourboniana were studied with regard to their phenolic contents, antioxidant, antibacterial,
antifungal and anticancer activities. The antioxidant potential was determined in terms of TPC
and Superoxide radical scavenging assays. Chemical composition of these plants extracts
determined by High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). T. bellerica exhibited highest
antioxidant and anticancer activity among tested extract, while in antimicrobial activity G.
glabra was active against almost all the bacterial and fungal strains. R. bourboniana was active
against only C. gloesporioides, M. roridum and X. campestris. The MTT (anticancer) assay
showed plants extract promising activity against SCC-4 and MiaPaCa 2 cancer cell lines. These
results indicate that T. bellerica, Glycyrrhiza glabra and Rosa bourboniana are good sources of
phytochemicals with antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.
