born in 1848. Cut Nyak Dien was born into a religiously aristocratic
family in Aceh Besar, Mukim VI region in 1848.

His father's name was Teuku Nanta Setia, an uleebalang VI Mukim,

who was also a descendant of Machmoed Sati, a migrant from West
Sumatra.

Machmoed Sati probably came to Aceh in the 18th century when the
Aceh sultanate was ruled by Sultan Jamalul Badrul Munir. Therefore,
the father of Cut Nyak Dien is a descendant of the Minangkabau.

Cut Nyak Dien's mother is Uleebalang Lampagar's daughter. In his

childhood, Cut Nyak Dien was a beautiful child. He received
education in the fields of religion (educated by parents or religious
teachers) and households (cooking, serving her husband, and relating
to daily life that was educated both by his parents).

Many men like Cut Nyak Dien and try to propose to her. At the age of
12, he was married by his parents in 1862 to Teuku Cek Ibrahim
Lamnga, the son of Uleebalang Lamnga XIII. They have one son
Married to Teuku Umar
At first Cut Nyak Dien refused. However, because Teuku Umar
invited him to fight in the battlefield, Cut Nyak Dien finally accepted
and remarried to Teuku Umar in 1880.

This made the morale of Aceh's spirit of struggle against the

Netherlands increase. In Cut Nyak Dien's Biography it is known that
Cut Nyak Dien and Teuku Umar have children named Cut Gambang.

The war continued in guerrilla and waged fi'sabilillah war. Around

1875, Teuku Umar made a move by approaching the Netherlands
and his relationship with the Dutch grew stronger.
'Surrender' to the Netherlands

On September 30, 1893, Teuku Umar and his army of 250 went to
Kutaraja and "surrendered" to the Dutch.

The Dutch were very happy because the dangerous enemy wanted
to help them, so they gave Teuku Umar the title of Teuku Umar
Johan Pahlawan and made him the commander of the Dutch army
unit with full power.

Teuku Umar kept a secret of deceiving the Dutch, even though he

was accused of being a traitor by the Acehnese. In fact, Cut Nyak
Meutia came to see Cut Nyak Dien and swore at him. Cut Nyak Dien
tried to advise him to return against the Dutch.
However, Teuku Umar is still in contact with the Netherlands. Umar
then tried to learn Dutch tactics, while slowly replacing as many
Dutchmen as possible in the units he controlled.

When the number of Acehnese in the force was sufficient, Teuku

Umar made a false plan on the Dutch and claimed that he wanted to
attack the Acehnese base.
Betrayal of Teuku Umar to the Netherlands

Teuku Umar and Cut Nyak Dien left with all the Dutch troops and
heavy equipment, weapons and ammunition, then never returned.
This betrayal is called Het verraad van Teukoe Oemar (betrayal of
Teuku Umar).

Teuku Umar, who betrayed the Netherlands, angered the Dutch and
launched a massive operation to capture both Cut Nyak Dien and
Teuku Umar. However, the guerrillas are now equipped with
equipment from the Netherlands.

They began to attack the Dutch while Jend. Van Swieten was
replaced. His successor, Gen. Jakobus Ludovicius Hubertus Pel, was
quickly killed and the Dutch troops were in chaos.
Cut Nyak Dien's struggle in the war against the Dutch

The Dutch then revoked the Teuku Umar title and burned down his
house, and also pursued his whereabouts. Dien and Umar continued
to pressure the Dutch, then attacked Banda Aceh (Kutaraja) and
Meulaboh (the former Teuku Umar base), so that the Dutch
continued to change generals in charge.

The "Maréchaussée" unit was then sent to Aceh. They were

considered barbaric and were very difficult to be conquered by the
Acehnese. In addition, most of the "De Marsose" troops were
Chinese-Ambonese who destroyed everything in their path.

As a result of this, the Dutch troops felt sympathy for the Acehnese
and Van der Heyden disbanded the "De Marsose" unit. This event
also led to the success of the General General because many people
who did not participate in the jihad lost their lives, and fear still
remained with the Acehnese population.

General Joannes Benedictus van Heutsz took advantage of this fear

and began hiring Acehnese to spy on rebel forces as informants so
that the Dutch discovered Teuku Umar's plan to attack Meulaboh on
11 February 1899. Eventually, Teuku Umar was shot dead by bullets

Continuing the Resistance Against the Netherlands

Cut Nyak Dien's struggle then led the resistance against the Dutch in
the interior of Meulaboh with his small army and tried to forget her
husband. This force continued to fight until its destruction in 1901
because the Dutch army was accustomed to fighting in the Aceh
area.
In addition, Cut Nyak Dien is getting older. His eyes were getting
nearsighted, and he was suffering from gout and also the number of
his troops continued to decrease, and the difficulty of getting food.
This pity the troops.
Cut Nyak Dien Caught

Cut Nyak Dien's subordinate named Pang Laot reported the location
of his headquarters to the Dutch because of pity. As a result, the
Dutch attacked Cut Nyak Dien's headquarters in Beutong Le Sageu.
They were shocked and fought to death. Cut Nyak Dien was arrested
and taken to Banda Aceh.

In the biography of Cut Nyak Dien, it is known that Cut Nyak Dien
was moved to Sumedang based on the last person to protect Dien
until his death. However, Cut Nyak Dien has farsightedness, so he
was caught. Dien tried to take the rencong and try to fight the
enemy.

Unfortunately, the action of Dien was successfully stopped by the

Dutch. Cut Gambang managed to escape to the forest and continue
the resistance that had been carried out by his father and mother.
Removed to Sumedang

After being arrested, Cut Nyak Dien was taken to Banda Aceh and
treated there. The disease such as farsightedness and gout gradually
recovered. However, Cut Nyak Dien was eventually banished to
Sumedang, West Java.
Because of Dutch fear that his presence would create a spirit of
resistance and also because he continued to deal with fighters who
were not yet submissive.

He was taken to Sumedang along with other Acehnese political

prisoners and attracted the attention of the Suriaatmaja regent. In
addition, male prisoners also expressed their concern for Cut Nyak
Dien, but Dutch soldiers were prohibited from disclosing the identity
of prisoners.
Cut Nyak Dien Died

He was arrested with a cleric named Ilyas who soon realized that Cut
Nyak Dien was an expert in Islam, so he was dubbed the "Mother of
the Beast". On November 6, 1908, Cut Nyak Dien died of old age.
