Introduction:

Being a docent for a month is quite challenging for me, because San

Agustin Church, Convent and Museum gives us a very informative

knowledge about the history, culture, diversity of the people in our country

and of course how christianity introduces to us by the Spanish. I learned a

lot in different types of Arts such as paintings, carvings, music, and a lot

more.

In my one month stay here, I give importance to the people of world

war II, to the victims of different wars such American and Japanese war.

Same as well the structure which is this church that serve as hide out of

Filipino families before, and besides Intramuros especially San Agustin

Church and Convent have a rich and colorful history.

Background of the Establishment:

The San Agustin Church was under the auspices of the Agustinian

Order. The friars took the cudgels in building the church. Like many

structures during that time, the church of San Agustin was built with the use

of nipa and bamboo. The building of the church started in 1571, it was then

officially named as Iglesia y Convento de San Pablo.

In 1574, the Chinese pirate, Limahong invaded Manila. The invasion

led to the burning of the city and the San Agustin Church was not spared.

This led to the first reconstruction of the church a year later. The second

church was made of wooden materials. Because of the choice of the

structural material used, it remained risky to fire accidents. True enough,

another fire caused the destruction of the church in 1583.

The Augustinian friars made sure not to commit the same mistakes

and so they decided to build the new church using adobe stones. In 1586,

they appointed Juan Macias to lead the design and construction of the

church. It was only in 1607 that the declaration of its official completion was

made. The structure endured even on the strongest earthquake that hit

Manila from the 16th to 17th century. The only major damaged that the San

Agustin endured was the collapse of one of the church’s bell tower, which

was then permanently removed therafter.

Problems Encountered:

First Week

- I don’t really master my idea or thought how to express the story of

every paintings, statues and even carvings.

- I handle a group of student (barkadas) that is really noisy and keep

on asking.

- I have difficulties in deliberation of the story because I am using

english language.

Second Week

- I dought myself if my guests are knowledgeable about the history

of the Philippines, it seems like I always thinking that he is

educated in History that’s why I need to be careful.

- Even also the people that is good in the history of Saints, I always

watch my word or the information that I am giving to them.

- I also encounter the guets that they have their own world during

the tour, they just keep on taking picture.

- There is also a guests that is not really interested about the history

or kind of guests that keep on walking.

Third Week

- We also encounter the minimal guests that is visiting each day.

- There is a time that we are suffered zero guest, we offer free guide

but most of them wanted to walk around and some of them are

preferred in reading.

- There is also a guest that keep on sharing on his life stories, he

keep on talking about different issues. It seems like, he wants a

guide to klisten to his stories during the tour.

- A guest that is in rush, they want to learn the history of the church

but in a minimum period of time.

Fourth Week

- Small kids that are errant in the tour, they keep on horseplaying

and touching the paintings.

- Kids that are crying during the tour because they are afraid in

statues.

- Old guests that requested a guide for their tour but the tour spend

in just sitting the chair because they need to rest their knees.
Acquired Learnings:

- Having a conversation to your guests is very important.

- Knowing their sides about the things that they see is also

important.

- Handling a noisy guests must be control in strategic way.

- Know the side of the guest if they are in hurry or thirsty and tired.

- It’s also important to hear their explanation if they are

knowledgeable because you are learning from them and vice versa.

- I learned to boost my confident especially in communication skills.

- It is better to add ideas about the museum rather than relaying to

the visual aids that is displayed.

- Observed guest if they are interested in the brief story or make

another action in the tour so that they can’t be bore.
