! 1. Students will sit in rows or tables as assigned. Depending on how the room is set up, students will be told what order they will spell in (e.g., row by row or clockwise). 2. Each student will clear his/her table of everything except for a white board and a marker. 3. One student spells at a time. 4. The judge pronounces the word to be spelled two times. 5. The speller listens carefully and may ask for the word to be repeated one more time. 6. The speller may ask for the English definition of the word. The judge will say the English definition. If it is a cognate, the judge will say so and say the word in French one more time. 7. When the speller is sure he/she understands the word, he/she spells it on the whiteboard and holds it up for the judge to verify. 8. The judge determines if the word was spelled correctly. Most words do not have accents. If they do, the judge should inform the spellers before judging that accents count. 9. If the correct spelling was written, the speller remains in the game. 10.If the spelling was incorrect, the speller is eliminated from the game. The judge gives the correct spelling and moves on to the next student. 11.When there are only two spellers left, if one player misspells a word, the other player must spell that word correctly, plus one more word to be declared the winner of the spelling bee. 12.Once eliminated, the spellers should sit quietly in the back of the room to watch or may leave to do other activities. Absolutely no talking from spectators or they will be asked to leave. 13.While the judge can add or remove time depending on the word, each word should receive about 30 seconds before they are eliminated for not finishing. ! ! !
