INSTITUTO ROBINSON

SPELLING BEE RULES / Low Elementary / k3

OBJECTIVES: To practice students' ability to spell, using their English

knowledge.

SPELLING PROCEDURE:

1. Students must be standing up during the contest. They must face the
judges at all times. Turning around is not permitted.

2. The student will have a time limit of 15 seconds to spell the word after it is
read.

3. The word must be spelled exactly as it is mentioned by the judges.

4. Participants must say the word, spell the word, and say the word again.
Otherwise it will be considered incorrect.

5. Each student can ask for repeating the word one time before he or she
starts to spell the word.

6. After they begin, they have to spell the word without interruptions.
Participants can ask to start over if they have started spelling AND HAVE
MADE NO MISTAKES.

7. The students have to make an effort to utter each letter distinctly and
with sufficient volume to be understood by the judges. Students have to
pronounce correctly and make a difference between the letters v and b,
and the letters c and z.
9. When one speller misspells a word, the other speller shall be given a new
word.

10. After five rounds (when applicable) words from the Word Bank will be
used.

11. The student that has less mistakes is going to be the first place

12. When the number of spellers is reduced to four or less, the elimination
procedure changes. At that point, when one speller misspells a word he/she
has to wait until the round is over to see if he/she can compete for the third
place. Words are not repeated; each student gets a new word.

13. Judges are in complete control of the competition. Their decision is final.

14. Guests or anyone in the room must remain silent and avoid making
gestures that can give the word away. If the jury determines it, guests,
parents, or anyone else will be asked to leave the room. Failure to comply
will cause the elimination of the student. Everyone should remain silent and
no one is allowed to go in and out of the room while students are
competing.

15. If a word has a double letter as: butterfly, students must spell it with
simple letters, avoiding saying double tt.
