ANALYSIS: PALLADIO’s VILLA ROTUNDA

due THURSDAY, Mar 07, beginning of class

PLAN & SECTION ANALYSIS (7 layers)

Using a plan and section drawing of Villa Rotunda at 1/16”=1’,
complete the following on individual layers of 11”x17” trace
paper:

base drawing:

1. DRAFTED PLAN AND SECTION with multiple line weights.

Construction lines mandatory, in pencil. Section cut uses thickest
line. NO BLACK POCHE. Indicate section cut on the plan with a
dash-dot-dash line and direction arrow.

3. SYMMETRY AND BALANCE

4. STRUCTURE

5. REPETITIVE TO UNIQUE

6. CIRCULATION TO USE-SPACE

7. SUMMARY PARTI (the whole & the parts)

VOLUMETRIC ANALYSIS (1 layer)

Using the 11x17 handed out in class, on 11x17 trace, draw in a. GRIDLINE DIVISIONS PARTICULAR TO ROTUNDA
pencil a series of 4 plan obliques that analyze HORIZONTAL b. HORIZONTAL GEOMETRIC ELEMENTS (lines, planes)
and VERTICAL elements. Scale is 1/32”=1’ c. VERTICAL GEOMETRIC ELEMENTS (lines, planes)

COMPOSITE VOLUME DRAWING (1 layer)

On 11x17 trace, combine the 4 horizontal and vertical
analyses into a single COMPOSITE OBLIQUE at 1/16”=1’ scale.

Set up a 30/60 Plan Oblique with your base drawing.

The Composite Oblique should reveal your understanding

of the overall heirachy, directions, and orientation of the
Rotunda’s elements.

ANALYTICAL MODEL - LINE, PLANE, VOLUME

At 1/16”=1’ scale, develop a synthesis model from the
COMPOSITE OBLIQUE & SUMMARY PARTI that demonstrates
your understanding of the hierachy, orientation, and
directionality of the elements in the Villa Rotunda.

Think carefully about the modeling materials you use in the

model. Materials and their dimensions and shapes imply
direction.
