THE FOUR AREAS OF SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

JERSON J. PASUENGOS

1. ECONOMIC - Corporate stakeholders expect companies to make a profit. In the past,

profit maximization was at the top of a company’s goals. Now, however, contributing
to the society as a whole encourages stakeholder and customer loyalty -- and increases
profits. In the pursuit of maintaining competitive advantage in their market and
industry, companies must at the same time seek to exploit efficiencies to eliminate
waste.
2. PHILANTROPIC - Companies must be philanthropic. Philanthropy can include
charitable donations, fundraising, encouraging the staff to volunteer or adopting
special projects. Fine arts and performing arts contributions are options for
philanthropy. Public and private school assistance shows the company’s dedication to
students and education. Projects that enhance the quality of life for the residents of a
community show the company’s commitment to the society's quality of life.
3. ETHICAL - Companies must respect the society's values and norms and operate
consistently with the society’s expectations. Companies must recognize new ethical
movements that the society adopts. Corporate goals must never overshadow the
society’s ethical principles. Legal compliance is not enough, however. Corporations
must act fairly, morally and respectfully.
4. LEGAL - In the legal component of social responsibility, companies must work within
the law and the government. Companies must be aware of all local, state and federal
regulations. Managers must stay current on legal issues so they can adapt operating
procedures to comply with new laws. Goods produced must not harm consumers and
must meet or exceed product safety requirements.

Gina Lopez was a generous soul. She was a lifetime philanthropist,

environmentalist, child-abuse warrior and former government secretary who had built a
legacy that will continue to impact and influence the Philippines (Isabel, 2019).

1. ECONOMIC AND ETHICAL

She became the Managing Director of the ABS-CBN Foundation.

She initiated Bantay Bata 163, the country’s first media-based hotline. In 1997,
Bantay Bata was the United Nations Grand Awardee for Excellence besting 187 countries
all over the world.
She established Bantay Kalikasan, for which she received the 1997 International
Public Relations Award of Excellence for the Environment and Outstanding Manilans
Award for the Environment, 2009.

She produced educational television shows on Science, Math, Values, History and
English for elementary and Philippine Literature for high school. For Sineskwela, Ms.
Lopez was honored with the UNESCO Kalinga Award, the first Southeast Asian to earn
such a distinction.

She was also the Vice-Chairperson of the ABS-CBN Bayan Foundation, which
provides microfinance assistance to micro-entrepreneurs. She was also the Chairman
Emeritus of the Southeast Asian Children’s Television.

2. PHILANTROPIC

Gina was a woman who did not think twice about giving back to her community.
Gina created a legacy that will continue to impact and influence the country for years to
come. She was a staunch eco-warrior who fought to better the country’s environmental
efforts, and educate people on the value of caring for mother earth. As the force behind
Bantay Kalikasan, Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission and government secretary for
the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, her efforts made waves for Kapit
Bisig Para sa Ilog Pasig, No To Mining in Palawan, the reforestation of the La Mesa
Watershed amongst many other environmental advocacies. Gina even held educational
TV programs like "G Diaries" in order to spread the word on the importance of going
green (Isabel, 2019).

3. LEGAL

Gina Lopez vs. Mining Companies

Gina Lopez was the environment secretary of Department of Environment and Natural
Resources (DENR). The appointment of Gina Lopez was the most significant change in
this institution, historically known to be hopelessly corrupt and graft-ridden. Secretary
Lopez may not be an environmental science expert, but her environmental activism has
given her enough will to do for the environment and country what previous DENR
secretaries failed to do. By September last year, she released suspension orders to almost
10 mines in the country. Expectedly, this action triggered pro-mining institutions as well
as individuals to react and accuse the DENR for being biased and unscientific.
