LGU Pitogo & DILG build seawall in Poblacion

The Municipality of Pitogo just like the other towns is also susceptible to different hazards
brought about by global warming such as flooding and sea level rise.

Although no historical records were reported due to storm surge in the past but the tragic
tsunami that took place in 1976 claimed thousands of casualties and destroyed properties.

As mitigating measure against storm surges, tidal waves, and tsunami, the LGU came up with a
project-- the shoreline protection, simply referred to as seawall.

A total of Php 12,500,000.00 has been provided by the Department of the Interior and Local
Government (DILG) and the Local Government Unit of Pitogo for the construction of the 147-
meter seawall along the coastal barangay of Poblacion, Pitogo.

The project serves as protective measure against storm surge and sea level rise, making the
people living along the shoreline feel safer.

Engineer Noel B. Ogang said the embankment project, which was completed on August 3, 2016,
serves as protection also to different establishments within the town proper from destruction.

“The seawall will serve as protection from sea leavel rise during typhoons and earthquake and
alleviate the problems of erosion along these coastlines. The structure redirects the waves back
to the sea,” said Engr. Ogang.

The seawall is also an avenue for physical fitness e.g. jogging, zumba, and the like among
healthy-lifestyle enthusiasts.

Likewise, seawall pathways serve as easy access to tourists mesmerized by the famous Pitogo
sunset.

The municipality plans to develop the remaining area for reclamation for future infrastructure
projects that will encourage economic development and sustainability.
