There are many students and even some young professionals who are addicted to Defense of the
Ancients or DOTA. This is a kind of computer game that can be played by multiple
players and is one of the most popular game to young students. Many students get
addicted to this game, and they can even stay in long hours inside computer shops just to play
this kind of game. There are studies proving that getting addicted to playing computer games
affects students' school performance. Sometimes, in order to make the game exciting; they make
a bet that whoever wins a certain match gets payed by the opposing player, so it becomes a form of
gambling. This study uses descriptive-analytic, all data is collected through a survey-questionnaire.
It is appropriate for the study because researchers will know the effects of playing DOTA on
various DOTA players and reading various articles and websites about DOTA. All data collected
is described by a variety of statistical method. From the data gathered in this study, the following
are proven; one to two hours are usually spent by students in playing Defense of the Ancients
(DOTA). The most common reason why Grade 11 students of Ramon Teves Pastor
Memorial-Dumaguete Science High School continue to play Defense of the Ancients (DOTA) is
that they play it during their free time, and the most common effects experienced by students are
blurring of their vision, cannot concentrate because of tiredness, they become quick tempered,
and they cannot manage their time properly. This study is beneficial to teachers, parents, and
students. It is better to be aware of the possible effects that DOTA can cause to students' health,

Background of the Study
This research was conducted in Ramon Teves Pastor-Memorial Dumaguete Science High
School, located on the street of Ma. Asuncion Village Ave., Barangay Daro, Dumaguete City.
This institution was established in the land donated by Don Ramon Teves Pastor in 1988. This

Technology is important in the lives of teachers and students. Through this study, teachers
will know the effects and reasons as to why students play DOTA. Teaching will be more
effective because teachers can help students in fields where they lack or need improvement.
Students
Students should be responsible in using computers and should limit their time in playing
DOTA. It would be best if students are aware of possible effect that DOTA brings, in order for
their health, studies and relationships among others would not be affected.
Parents
It is the parents’ responsibility to limit their child’s time in playing DOTA. Through this
study, parents will learn more about what they can do concerning this ordeal. They can find ways

Research Technique
Those involved in this study are students of the 11th grade of Ramon Teves Pastor
Memorial-Dumaguete Science High School in the school year 2017-2018, Dumaguete City. The
respondents are composed of thirty (30) students. The entire population was sampled.
Instruments Used
Survey Questionnaires were used by researchers to collect data from respondents. In making the
questionnaire, the researchers have tried to read various articles and websites on how to play
DOTA. The sources of information about this study was given credits by the researchers. The
survey questionnaire done by the researchers is based on their observations of various players.
The researchers also asked their teachers to make sure that the questions placed in the
questionnaire are right and have been reviewed again.
Procedure
First, the researchers asked permission from the principal of the school Ramon Teves Pastor
Memorial-Dumaguete Science High School to conduct a survey about the effects of playing
DOTA to the students. The researchers made a survey that were distributed to Grade- 11 students
because there were more DOTA players in Grade- 11 than those of other year levels.

Results and Discussion
Findings
Table 1 contains the hours spent by grade 11 students in playing Defense of the Ancients
(DOTA). Results showed that most 11th grade students spend about 1-2 hours playing Defense
of the Ancients (DOTA). 23.33 % of students spend 3-4 hours playing. 20 %of the students spend
more than six hours playing Defense of the Ancients (DOTA) and 10.33 % of the students spend
According to Tsukayama (2015), young people make up more than 1/3 of their time
playing computer games like Defense of the Ancients (DOTA). Tsukayama’s study showed that
most of the teenagers playing DOTA are usually students from thirteen to seventeen (13 - 17)

DOTA in a week.

twelve students (12) answered that playing DOTA has nothing to do in dealing with their time

Table 9 shows the response of students in accordance to DOTA affecting their health.
53.33% of the surveyed population answered yes while 46.67% answered no.
Sixteen (16) students responded that DOTA affects their health while 14 answered otherwise.

Table 10 shows the reasons as to why students think their frequent playing of DOTA
affects their health. Accompanied by reasons like having ulcer, blurry vision and having a fever

their studies. Sharing the response of students to other people, whether or not playing DOTA is
important to them, is essential to them as Senior High School students. As seen, all thirty
students, covering 100% of the surveyed population answered that playing DOTA is not

usual number of hours spent by the students in playing DOTA in a day is 1-2 hours. The
researchers also found out that the main reason of students in playing DOTA is that they use it as
a form of leisure during their free time. Based from the collected information, the main effects of

Recommendations
For further exploration, the researchers recommend the future undertakers of the study, to
be aware and to take notice of the effects of playing DOTA (Defense of the Ancients) because
based on the information gathered it possessed negative effects on students. The researchers
would also advise the future undertakers of the study to exert more time and focus on the
