Post 3 (NGO trailer introduction)
“If you don’t have it, what do you do? You make it.” That’s how Tastuya Nakatani
realized his vision to create complex harmonic sounds with Chinese wind gongs.
He developed and crafted many of the equipment you’ll see in his performance:
the Kobo bows, mallets, and surrounding instrumentation equipment. After ten
years of planning and preparation, the NGO began touring in 2011 with four
adapted gongs and has grown to 17 gongs. It is the only bowed gong orchestra in
the world.

Post 5 SKIP THIS ONE.
Tatsuya Nakatani: Essences and Abiogenesis-original evolution of life or living organisms from
inorganic or inanimate substances.
What is improvised music without visuality? That visuality can be in the arrangement of players
and their standing, sitting or moving bodies in relationship to the room's acoustics.
Percussionist, Tatsuya Nakatani, born in Osaka, Japan and currently based outside of
Philadelphia, is one of these artists. Essences are a duo summit between Nakatani and Boston-
based trumpeter Forbes Graham. Abiogenesis is quite measured even as it hinges on clear
physical workings-over—blowing on metal disks, a curdling punch to a floor tom, and an array
of piled cymbals met with balance and clarity in blunt poise. Nakatani recently accompanied a
yoga retreat in Houston, Texas, primarily on bowed gongs, which though not exactly producing
"relaxing" tonalities, certainly serve to create centering feedback.
